Yearly, in October, Berlin shines for twelve consecutive nights of shows thanks to one of the largest lighting festivals in the world: the Festival of Lights. This year's edition, held on 10 to the 21 October, marked a premiere for Barco and its partner XL Video: Eight ultra-bright HDF-W26 projectors helped depict the history of the new Volkswagen Golf VII on the façade of the legendary Hotel Adlon.

For twelve nights in a row (of the 10 to the 21 October 2012) the 8th Festival of Lights (Festival of Lights) Berlin brought together visual artists from all over the world to give color and, above all, light, to the main monuments of the German capital. Museums, exhibitions, Projections, Illuminated buildings, Luminous cocktails, Jazz music in the gardens of the ministry, Streets and avenues transformed into extraordinary walkways of light…

A particularly striking projection mapping project was sponsored by Volkswagen: the German automaker promoted its newly launched VW Golf VII on the façade of the prestigious Adlon Hotel. The projection was supported by eight ultra-bright HDF-W26 projectors of ship -first used in Germany- in a configuration 2×4 Soft Edge. Barco partner XL Video Germany took over the installation.

XL Video has invested in a number of new high-brightness Barco projectors to meet market demand for exceptional brightness levels. The new HDF-W26 projectors seemed to be ideal for Volkswagen's projection mapping on the façade of the Hotel Adlon.

Ultra-high brightness projectors

Marco Scholwin, Operations Manager of XL Video Germany, Explained: “A few months ago, We have expanded our range of projectors with 44 Boat HDF-W26. With their 26.000 Light output lumens, These projectors set a new standard in brightness. The start-up in Berlin met our expectations for brightness, Ease of use and reliability. and, the most important thing, Our client was also very happy with the brightness of the installation”.

This Volkswagen multimedia 3D mapping was a tribute to the water elements, earth, Fire and air over one of the central buildings of the German capital, the Adlon Kempinski Hotel, which is located right next to the Brandenburg Gate. The 3D staging of the Adlon changed the shape of the hotel while playing with the elements of the building, creating new figures in various dimensions. Barco's Optical Soft Edge Matching technology was used to maintain the black level in the overlap zone of the separate images.

Marco Scholwin added: “We chose DLP projectors from 26.000 lumens to set a bright highlight to the Berlin Festival of Lights. In addition, the WUXGA chip of the new projectors perfectly covered the façade of 70 X 40 meters from the historic Adlon “.
