Visitors to the 'Pure Land show: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang’ organized at the Arthur M Gallery. Sackler of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington (Us.) are privileged witnesses to an innovative immersive technology application that uses projectiondesign F10 AS3D projectors.

Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang

On the occasion of the celebration of the 25 Arthur M Gallery Anniversary. Sackler of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, the gallery offers a deep visual experience that unies with art and technology. Drums and harps echo as dancers dance and spin, and images of Buddhist art emerge to welcome ancient China to viewers. Making his U.S. debut, the exhibition 'Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang’ digitally recreates one of the Mogao Caves, who preserve fabulous temples decorated with Buddhist-themed wall paintings, showing narratives of the sutras and representations of Buddhas and mythological characters from India, Central Asia and other parts of China.

It is a set of Buddhist grottos - more than 700- located in Gansu Province, around the town of Dunhuang, in the middle of the Gobi Desert. The Mogao Grottoes are located in a site that was strategic on the Silk Road between the 2nd centuries A.C. and XIV D.C., who came to communicate in his time of splendor the great Chinese empire with West Asia and India.

The 3D scenic journey of 360 grades uses F10 AS3D projectors projectiondesign to reproduce stunning images of paintings and sculptures in 220 metres of rock cave wall known as 'Eastern Paradise of Bhaisajyaguru', a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is closed to the public to ensure its conservation.

Pioneering immersive experience

Julian Raby, director of The Dame Jillian Sackler of Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the Freer Gallery of Art, pointed out that “'Pure Land' project exemplifies the exhibition experience of the future”.

“Through the combination of art, my e, advanced visualization and an interactive environment, visitors will enjoy a gigantic visual spectacle with high-quality image and storytelling”, added Professor Jeffrey Shaw, dean of the School of Creative Media at City University in Hong Kong.

The immersive audiovisual system uses six F10 AS3D projectors, six computers with graphics cards, surround sound and a giant circular projection screen that is suspended on the ceiling.

Shaw added that “the resulting panoramic 3D projection offers an experience true to the real feeling of being present inside these historic caves. The potential of technology for academic and educational purposes is important, because many people can access the caves in a richer and more detailed way than in the physical place, where, for conservation reasons, visits are very restricted. We work exclusively with projectiondesign for projects such as 'Pure Land', because its 3D projectors and hardware are ideal for edge-blending and geometric correction with large-scale multi-projector arrays. We find that projectiondesign is the most robust and reliable projection technology there is. ”

last, Thierry Ollivier, vice president of Sales at projectiondesign Asia, ha manifestado: “The conservation and cultural importance of old projects through the use of 3D and interactive visualization has always been important for projectiondesign”.
