The International Telecommunication Union (OUT) It has awarded Spain, through the Secretariat of State for Information Society and the Digital Agenda, the presidency of the United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) initiative Platform UN which coordinates the activities of smart cities.
The U4SSC is an international initiative to implement localities smart sustainable cities worldwide. Advocates public policies to encourage the use of ICT in order to facilitate the transition to smart cities.
Spain's presidency has been known for the VII (Colombia) which was held from 3 to 5 April. This meeting is organized by ITU with other international organizations such as UNESCO or the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL).
This event, held under the slogan 'circular economy and smart and sustainable cities', serves as a global platform for discussion and exchange of knowledge on using ICTs to protect the environment, develop the potential of circular economy and accelerate the transition from cities to smart and sustainable models. The meeting has concluded with the Manifesto Manizales which promotes the conversion to smart cities.

Se basa en la regulación, materializada en la aprobación de normas e iniciativas internacionales, en la transformación digital de las ciudades y en el apoyo a la industria mediante la promoción de estándares y convocatorias de ayudas.
Currently, the Spanish smart cities initiative is a model that enjoys national and international recognition. The Broadband Commission of the UN, for example, described as "exemplary" the Spanish project. Many countries, particularly in Latin America, Spain has requested cooperation in this area.
