Virtual Rehab is another example of how multimedia technology can be applied to the healthcare environment. It is a solution, based on a fun 3D environment, which has been implemented in Guipuzcoa for the rehabilitation of patients with multiple sclerosis.
The Association of Multiple sclerosis in Gipuzkoa (Ademgi) implements a virtual system for rehabilitation of patients suffering from this disease. The system, called Virtual Rehab, uses the program of r & d of the Basque Foundation for Multiple sclerosis and has been developed by the company Virtualware.
Virtual Rehab system combines 3D and Kinect technology of Microsoft to adapt the program to the special needs of these patients.
Through a more playful 3D environment-based virtual rehabilitation, patient faces different types of exercises much more motivated, and the therapist succeeds in obtaining reports on the evolution of the patient.
They are front of the screen and follow movements indicating the virtual figure, all executed in a playful environment that motivates them so they exercise legs and arms, improving coordination, balance, elasticity and fundamental concepts for the treatment of those who suffer from multiple sclerosis.
Another advantage offered by this system is that patients do not have to scroll to Ademgi facilities, but can follow the rehabilitation from your own home. They just need a computer and a camera of the Kinect device that captures the movement and move to the figure.
Ademgi has planned that this solution might be used by over six hundred people suffering from multiple sclerosis in Guipuzcoa and that can improve their quality of life.
