The Smart House Living Lab Campus of International Excellence Moncloa (CEI Moncloa), located in the vicinity of the School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSIT) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), has an advanced multimodal room virtual reality is adapted for people in wheelchairs. It is a cave two sides (wall and floor) equipped with two stereoscopic projectors Christie Mirage DS + 6K-M used to test and develop new applications of Ambient Intelligence.

Occupying an area of 150 square meters, the Smart House Living Lab is fully equipped for daily life of anyone including people with disabilities, flexible design that allows you to monitor and experience the application of ICT to improve housing quality of life, especially in the health sector. In this environment, researchers and companies can analyze the acceptance by the user of the generated solutions as well as their degree of usability, while making an assessment of the feasibility of bringing the product to market.

3D projection

For 3D projection, Ingevideo made a comparison between three brands of projectors, of which finally eligió a Christie "for the excellent price performance and security that has given us this brand over the years as to guarantee operation, care and support gives us a level of collaboration in all projects, "says Miguel Motos, director of Virtual Reality and Simulation Ingevideo.

The two projectors, working with a resolution of 1400 x 1050, using a system of mirrors to shorten the projection distance. The projector that shoots above ground is hanging on the ceiling, while the projected onto the front wall is behind it by rear projection. The useful surface of the screen is 250 x 187 cm and the aspect ratio is 4: 3.

Virtual reality solution

As virtual reality software tool used Vizard WorldViz and as a workstation player HP Z800. 3D glasses are brand Volfoni EDGE 1.1+. For audio you are using surround sound speakers Logitech 3D stereo.

The virtual reality system also comprises a wireless headset HD (Head Mounted Display, HMD) brand Sensics and a pair of gloves 5DT. In addition a tracking system consists of eight infrared cameras WorldViz PPT-X that are within the cave and which serve to capture the movement of the person who is inside of it and generate the correct views to be used 3D visualization.

The virtual reality room incorporates a development that allows people in wheelchairs, whether motorized or manual use of the cave. It is a motion platform consisting of rollers, electronics and an interface that manage to move the movement of wheelchairs to the virtual world. This also allows 3D design environment accessible home for a disabled person.

Miguel Motos, of Ingevideo, the greatest difficulty of the installation was performed installation in a small space: "The area where the cave is very small, so in addition to the system of mirrors to shorten the projection distance had to use special structures to place projectors, and in that sense the compact size of the Mirage helped immensely. Development platform for wheelchairs and their integration with the rest of the system was also a very complex challenge that could solve ".
