Absen at Istanbul airport

the Istanbul Airport (Turkey) is located on the outskirts of the city, and it is thought that it will attend to 200 million passengers per year, eclipsing Atatürk's.

In the center of the new airport terminal is the duty free considered the largest in the world. Newly built by Unifree It has an area of 53.000 square meters and 71 stores where the products of 54 Brands.

In order to create a spectacular visual experience, more than a thousand square meters of Led screens have been installed. Absen, including a façade of 300 metre, that follows the corridor that crosses the duty free zone, as well as two of 120 square meters, installed on the roof, at each end of the terminal.

This ambitious project was supervised by the integrator Astel, which was followed by a brief report from the joint managers of the area: the Turkish company Unifree and the German retail company Gebr Heinemann. It was chosen to Astel for his career as a creator of digital display solutions and his professional knowledge of LEDs.

This chose to use Absen Led products given its high level of brightness, clarity and large viewing angles, as well as for his experience in other airport projects.

"There were many parts that were complex., especially curved Led segments that are not standard, as the architectural design of the duty free façade was based on the Bosphorus, the fluid channel that separates Europe from Asia", explains Cilga Ozcelik, Astel Sales Support Manager.

For the 300 meters in length, Astel installed each section in the form of a wave, fitting the Led tiles at different angles and using special connectors between the screens. Due to the curved design, the frames had to be modified to achieve the desired effect. The curved façade is made with Absen's N2.5 Led screen, which has a distance between pixels of 2,5 mm and a brightness of 1.500 Nits.

At each end of the shopping area there are two very high Led screens of 120 square meters that greet passengers when they enter their departure terminals. Video walls are made with N5D Plus models, that have a distance between pixels of 5,2 mm and a brightness of 3.500 nits to ensure content is clearly seen from afar.

According to Selen Guler Arabaci, Absen's Director of Business Development, installing the two giant video walls suspended in the non-standard architectural design of the new airport led to certain technical problems.

"The roof of the airport does not support more than five tons of weight, so Absen provided the lightest Led tiles available, without altering visual performance. Astel also created a lighter bracket for installing the displays.. Then a motorized forklift was used, specially designed to raise and fix video walls in position, to 8 meters above ground".

"Having to install such a large amount of LED in such a safe environment and in such a limited time frame of four months was a huge challenge", says Shaun Xu, regional director of Absen. "Astel assigned a team of technicians who worked uninterruptedly on the premises for many weeks to ensure that the project was completed on time and with the highest level of quality.".

The operation of this complex visual network is managed by System9, which provided central management and control of all displays with its S9Vision signage software. Also provided a price checker, orientation signage, video analysis and information on exchange rates in the duty free zone, as well as a remote monitoring service and on-site support to ensure that all operating systems are operating at peak performance.

"The Led screens have been in operation since the beginning of the year and the result gives us great satisfaction», said Osman Ayhan, Unifree IT Director. 'Specifically., the facades of our duty free shop at Istanbul Airport have attracted the maximum attention of our passengers. With almost all these digital applications, our goal is to offer airport visitors a shopping experience that makes a difference and is more enjoyable for them. We believe we have achieved this and have turned Istanbul Airport into a favourite destination for travellers.".
