With the development of a pilot experience to see the Holy Week in Malaga at any time of the year, thanks to VRestudio and Vectorpipe technology.

Telefonica 5G Ayuntamiento Malaga

As part of the use case initiative with 5G that Telephone develops within the framework of 5G Technological Cities, the operator has collaborated with the Malaga City Council for a pilot experience (not yet available to the public) that allows you to see the Holy Week of this Andalusian city from different points of the route of the thrones at any time of the year.

This pilot project adapted to the possibilities offered by 5G, along with augmented reality technology, in the tourist field it is based on the images that Telefónica recorded in the Holy Week of 2019 with 360º cameras in several points of the center of Malaga and the development of a mobile application (watch attached video).

Thanks to the increased bandwidth of the 5G network and the edge computing (processing of data near where it is generated), the application will be able to download with very low latency and with high quality images, with 360º real-time vision.

this, together with image recognition techniques, to ARCore technology (the augmented reality system of Google) that is in the devices and geopositioning, will allow you to enjoy at any time the Holy Week in Malaga.

In the future, to view these contents it will only be necessary for the user to open the application from a mobile or a 5G tablet and be located in one of the areas of the historic center of Malaga where the images were recorded (like Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución and Port of Malaga). This application superimposes the reality of the current moment with the passage of the thrones that were recorded in 2019 and was in that place.

These types of projects with immersive experience will make it easier for the user to see what is happening around them, how the procession progresses, the atmosphere or even listening to the ambient sound of that moment, so that anyone can enjoy the experience of Holy Week in Malaga at any time of the year.

In this pilot project Telefónica has worked with VRestudio and Vectorpipe, two Malaga companies located in the Digital Content Pole of the city and leaders in virtual reality, augmented and in video distribution.

Mercedes Fernandez, innovation manager at Telefónica Spain, has pointed out that "tourism is a sector with great potential for 5G, to provide users with new ways to visit and discover diverse destinations and festivities with more real and immersive experiences”.

Regarding this pilot experience, Fernández stresses that “the possibility of seeing Holy Week would come to complete other pilots, launched in Segovia and Barcelona, that allow the visitor to be immersed in scenes of past centuries in real scenarios of the present, or overlay relevant information of what we are seeing while going on a tour bus".
