Elation transforms new York's Little Island into an oasis of light and art

HGLD has selected the lighting of Elation with IP65 rating for the spectacular space Little Island (@Pier55), un gran parque público de Nueva York que combina naturaleza y arte.

Conceived as a large leaf floating in the water, the new park Little Island it has recently opened to the public and has become the green and artistic oasis of the Hudson River, west of Manhattan (New York), offering a different and creative space to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.

The topography of the park, with 132 pots suspended over water, houses a lush landscape of rolling hills, walking trails and large open expanses of grass. Among the most 390 flower species, trees and shrubs of this small island there are spaces for performances, equipped with automated luminaires Elation Professional with classification IP65.

Designed by the studio Heatherwick and the landscape architecture company MNLA, the park of this artificial island, more than 9.700 m2, has been funded by the Foundation of the Diller-von Furstenberg Family, with the performing arts as an integrated component.

An amphitheater with capacity for 687 squares and views of the Hudson, a smaller stage for 200 people and an open square make up the space to host various artistic programs, events and performances.

Aesthetics and nature

Little Island opened its doors in the past 21 May amid praise and applause from New Yorkers and visitors. The new park hosts a varied program, mostly free, con un calendario que incluye artistas locales, cabezas de cartel y festivales de una semana centrados en un género concreto.

Early 2020, justo antes de la pandemia, Josh Weisberg, of Navolo Audio-Video, incorporó al proyecto a Herrick Goldman (of HGLD y fundador Evoke Collaborative) al proyecto para que le ayudara a diseñar y especificar los sistemas de iluminación que cumpliera las exigencias estéticas de un entorno natural, que ha suministrado WorldStage.

El anfiteatro, called The Amph, se encuentra en el extremo occidental de Little Island. Los arquitectos diseñaron seis mástiles en el parque alrededor de este espacio, que tiene un escenario de 10,6 meters wide by 16,4 depth, con público situado en tres lados y el río Hudson al Oeste.

Con el fin de encontrar una luminaria idónea para este singular espacio, con clasificación IP65 para soportar las condiciones climáticas extremas de Nueva York, el esquema de iluminación y las especificaciones se sometieron a varias modificaciones.

“Pasamos por siete u ocho iteraciones diferentes -explica Goldman- comenzando con una trama más teatral, pero esto requería demasiados aparatos de iluminación, lo que no se ajustaba al presupuesto ni a la directiva de una estética limpia”.

Tras probar varias luminarias de las series Paladin and Proteus by Elation, Goldman eligió la primera, un híbrido Led wash/strobo/blinder con zoom, y la cabeza móvil Led Proteus Maximus, of 50.000 Lumens from this manufacturer.

Goldman optó por montar ocho Paladin en cada mástil. “Con un escenario de tres cuartos hay que iluminar desde todos los ángulos en los que se sitúa el publico, lo que suponía cubrir 270º. Una vez que montamos los Paladins y los encendimos, los ampliamos y cubrimos todo el anfiteatro, incluidos los asientos, con una gran cantidad de colores saturados”.

Debajo de estas luminarias se han instalado en cada mástil un par de cabezas móviles Led Proteus Maximus para dar más flexibilidad al sistema. “Podemos tener a alguien actuando en el centro del escenario y darle cuatro Proteus para cubrir todos los ángulos y seguir teniendo ocho para decorar el escenario, que están programados para cubrir las dieciséis diferentes áreas”, explains Goldman.

One of the aspects that this expert highlights is the white balance of the Paladin for each of the points of light on the stage. “Sabía que el CRI oscilaría entre 72 and 84, approximately, what is great for an Led wash, but when it came time for balance I thought they might be a little green or a little pink. As we tested them, adding and subtracting the white Led chip, obtuvimos un color realmente estupendo”.

The same happened with the mobile head Led Proteus Maximus. “Marcamos la rueda CTO y alcanzamos todos los objetivos de balance de blancos con tanta facilidad que apenas tuvimos que marcar ningún otro color para conseguirlo”.

Scenario ‘The Glade’

With nature and art as symbiotic elements, the island's garden has other smaller areas for even more intimate performances. The Glade, in the South area of Little Island, it has seating and sloping lawn for two hundred people.

Eight have been installed in this area Elation SixPar 200 IP and a couple of Paladins, that provide simple and quality lighting to this scenario, of 4,8 meters wide.

The Paladins, which are used for front lighting from more than 18 meters high, they can also approach the seating area to illuminate the viewer, as well as zooming wide enough to cover a band.
