Vioso in Olympic Museum of Athens

For interactive exhibits, shown in this Olympic Museum of Athens, AV solutions have been used Vioso. Their goal is to take a journey through the history of the Olympic Games.

Last May, the Olympic Museum of Athens officially opened its doors to take visitors on a journey through the history of the Olympic Games, from his birth to the present day. For this, different exhibitions have been made that offer interactive visual and audio experiences with the projectors of Epson and Vioso's AV solutions.

The pandemic has been responsible for the delay in the opening of this museum, which was scheduled for last year. With a surface of 3.500 square meters, the museum is located near the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, in Maroussi, Greece.

Made by the real estate company Lamda Development, the aim of the museum is to house the entire Olympic legacy of Greece while highlighting Athens as the Olympic capital.

The project, which began in August 2020 and ended in December of the same year, required for the realization of various exhibitions 13 Epson projectors. The acoustics and AV designer, Technology & Acoustics, based in Greece, has been responsible for the complex AV system; while Lamda Development has supplied the digital media content and system integrator, based in Athens, Omikron Electronics has been in charge of engineering, supply and integration of systems.

The journey through the Olympic Museum of Athens begins in a cylindrical room that represents the timeline of the modern Olympic Games to the present day.. The exhibition, call Prologue, recounts significant moments throughout history, through a symbolic 3D projection of an olive branch.

The olive branch surrounds the entire hall and each leaf houses a canvas of significant Olympic moments, as the first time women participated in the games and the first Winter Olympics.

For 360⁰ projection mapping covering 14 meters wide around the room, creating a canvas of 8,240×1.200 Pixels, five Epson projectors were installed. To accompany the 3D projection, teams chose a surround sound system 5.1 of Tannoy, that provides directional audio, in addition to the musical score that sets the atmosphere in the room.

The projection required a calibration and edge combination system that was up to the task of this magnitude and complexity.. Omikron Electronics chose camera-based automatic alignment technology Vioso Anystation Anyblend, to calculate the established strain and mix data and connect it natively to the multiple GPU outputs of the Vioso software to be used by any third-party tool for display.

Anystation Integrate Server is Vioso's answer to a multi-projector workstation capable of delivering high-quality performance and reliability.

"The Vioso camera calibration software and hardware was the easiest answer for us., as the software is unique in the ability to use camera self-calibration for such a challenging application. The Prologue room required projection mapping on uneven surfaces, and Anystation Integrate, with Vioso Core in combination with Integrate software, provides the complete turnkey solution and handles it with ease", Says Vangelis Petridis, CTO of Omikron Electronic.

The other exhibits where high-quality projection calibration and edge combination was required, how Victories and Defeats, Athens 2004 and the exhibitions of the Olympic Stadium, present a combination of Vioso solutions.

Anyblend software provides a fully functional combined edge projection, built into all Windows desktop apps. Vioso Player provides easy playback for multiple projectors and Anystation Nano offers a complete turnkey solution with a combination of hardware and software. All three solutions were used at the Athens facility to maximize the visitor experience.

The Exhibition Victories and Defeats is housed inside a circular room in the gallery Epos, displaying Olympic torches through the years, Awards, Olympic medals and souvenirs.

The exhibition features video footage of its athletes' Olympic successes and failures, projected in a panadomo of 10,3 metre. This is composed of two projectors Epson EB-L1495U that required extreme geometry adaptation. A Vioso Anystation Nano is responsible for projection mapping, the combination of edges and synchronized playback of video and the Tannoy surround sound audio system.

"We wanted to envelop the visitors in the excitement of victory and the agony of defeat with this display.", explains Petridis. "A Vioso Anystation Nano is more than capable of managing the entire exposure without complications.. Player provided an easy-to-use tool for playback, video deformation and mixing, providing enough rendering power and a very easy-to-use GUI”.

Three more have been installed Epson EB-L610U in the exhibition of the Olympic Stadium, which explores the ancient Olympic Games and illustrates the Panathenaic Stadium, one of Athens' top tourist attractions and the only stadium in the world that is made entirely of marble.

The exhibit features a double-sided projection screen of 8 meters wide in the center of the room, with the calibrated Vioso Core and the use of Vioso Player edge that mixes the projection.

"The Museum of the Olympic Games is a testament to the work of the teams involved in the project.. It takes its visitors on a breathtaking journey through the first Olympic Games into the modern era.", clarifies Raul Vandenberg, Sales Director of Vioso. “It has been a pleasure to support the facility with our product line and participate in the tribute to the legendary feats of past Olympic athletes.”.
