Tras el éxito de la Immersivus Gallery Porto (Porto Immersive Gallery – IGP), a projection map art experience held in the heart of Portugal's second largest city,- The management made the decision to expand this concept to a new gallery in the capital: Immersive Gallery Lisbon (Lisbon Immersive Gallery – IGL).

BY Stumpfl y Ocubo an IGPOccubus, who was in charge of the artistic direction of the original gallery in Porto, returned to coordinate the new installation in the 18th century Mãe D’Água das Amoreiras Reservoir, in Lisbon.

“The decision to create the Immersivus Gallery Lisbon arose from the success of the IGP, which was the first virtual art gallery in the entire country”, comments Edoardo Canessa, executive producer of Ocubo. “In addition to basing ourselves on the successful IGP model, we hope to go further. If technology allows, our goal is to make it Portugal's first truly interactive art experience”.

With this goal in mind, the Mãe D’Água das Amoreiras reservoir was transformed into a fully immersive 360º projection canvas.

“The facility is expected to remain in place for some time., the content is temporary”, explains Canessa. “The IGP was born with the idea of a single permanent exhibition, but we decided to diversify the content with a changing agenda, to maintain its vitality and ensure it remained attractive to local people and visitors. The plan was always to do the same with IGL”.

Although several immersive experiences will be developed in the future, with different themes and artists, It was decided that the timeless art of Claude Monet and Gustav Klimt would be the perfect way to welcome visitors to the new IGL.

“Working with art created by famous painters is both easy and difficult.”, continued Canessa. “It's easy creatively because the original 'image' has already been produced before we start., and its aesthetic beauty is practically guaranteed. At the same time, It is very difficult because we have the responsibility to explore the full potential of these paintings; alter and animate something that has been created by a prestigious artist and enjoyed by art lovers for generations. It really is a double edged sword.”.

Ocubo has made several visits to the site to record, check the technical details and obtain the photogrammetry necessary to create the 3D content.. Once the content is created, The team deployed a total of 20 projectors to cover the entire room. which included the four walls, the roof and four large columns in the center; as well as five high-performance servers running Pixera media server software from BY Stumpfl.

First used Pixera media servers for intricate projection mapping at the Fête des Lumières show, which took place in Lyon (France) in December 2018. The introduction of the version 1.6 gave Ocubo designers more tools to create a virtual environment in which the works of Monet and Klimt would inhabit.

“Although we have always used AV Stumpfl technology”, Canessa clarifies, “This was the first time we made full use of the software's 3D capabilities, which was necessary due to the nature of this space itself. Pixera software had already been very useful for the Lyon show, but this was our first experience using a solo 3D workflow, although with a little help from a distance”.

Despite some challenges faced by the technical team - accompanied by programming manager Carlos Carvalho- when approaching the formatting process, were able to complete Pixera's programming and open to the public as planned in November 2020.
