Televisió de Catalunya hosts the Tmediat and Ateme video compression technologies workshop
The present and future of compression technologies has been the topic of the seminar held by Tmediat and Ateme at the Televisió de Catalunya headquarters. An event in which HEVC, IPTV and OTT have been the main protagonists and where experiences carried out in ultra high definition have been shown, like the Sochi project, the Soccer World Cups 2014 or the Roland Garros tournament.
the day 11 June, the seminar on compression technologies and their applications convened by Televisió de Catalunya was held at the headquarters of Televisió de Catalunya. Tmediat y Atem. The seminar began by reviewing the basics of MPEG encoding, comparing them with those corresponding to MPEG2, and showing the advantages it offers. The difference between coding was explained 8 y 10 bits, and it was technically justified why the use of 10 bits does not increase bandwidth consumption. The origin of latency in the coding processes was shown below..
The next topic that was addressed was the comparison between IPTV and OTT, the differences between operating models on managed and unmanaged networks, and the need for adaptive streaming and its impact on service provision by telecommunications operators.
The third panel, the most anticipated in the opinion of some, revolved around the next generation HEVC encoder. The status of the standard and its definition as well as its benefits and applications were reviewed.. Special attention was paid when discussing the experiences carried out in the Roland Garros tournament., where Ateme participated in an experimental HEVC broadcast in 4K from start to finish.
The fourth point of the program was dedicated to the latest news on content contribution from two points of view: contribution by satellite and through unmanaged networks. In the first of them the different DVB-S2 standards were discussed, DVB-S2+, DVB-S3; while in the second the benefits that the use of this technology brings to the user were explained, such as having an integrated solution with a low level of investment and operating costs.. Finally, Ateme's participation in the Sochi events and the World Soccer Championship in Brazil was discussed and why H264 is valid for 4K transmissions..
The event ended with a comparison between MPEG4 and HEVC encoding at various bit rates in which attendees actively participated., identifying each of the formats and requesting the corresponding bandwidth changes in each of them.
