Elation Platinum FLX lights up the first edition of the Kaaboo Del Mar music festival
The Platinum FLX hybrid moving head has starred in the lighting system of the first edition of the Kaaboo Del Mar festival, recently held in the Californian city of Del Mar with the attendance of top-level international artists.
For three intense days, the Kaaboo Del Mar music festival has gathered in this Pacific coastal town, next to the city of San Diego (California), to artists like 'The Killers', ‘No Doubt’, ‘Snoop Dogg’ y Sheryl Crow, inter alia, in the first official call for this event, which has entrusted the stage lighting design to the specialist Nook Schoenfeld, who has used the technology of Elation Professional, firm whose products distributes in the Spanish market visualsvisuals.
In this project, Nook Schoenfeld has tested the new and award-winning (with the innovation award at Plasa Show 2015) Elation Platinum FLX hybrid moving head. “I really liked it a lot, and being the first time I used these moving heads with my lighting console I have had to load new libraries, and the truth is that I was not very clear while I was programming what I was going to find during the concert. But the truth is that the beam is very bright, and even in the afternoon and with a lot of sun, I have been able to focus gobos on stage and at night, during the concert, “Everything was very well focused”.
Elation Platinum FLX incorporates the Philips Platinum 20R, of 470 watts of power and a luminosity of 23.000 lumens. This new hybrid moving head incorporates an innovative dual optical system that provides the versatility of a Beam type beam. (1,8° a 18°), Spot (2,9° a 25°) y Wash (6° a 42°) y, as Schoenfeld assures, “It is really quick and easy to change from a Beam type beam to another Spot, For example".
One of the aspects highlighted by this lighting designer is that “I was pleasantly surprised by the CMY color mix and also the ten dichroic colors that it offers.”. I have been able to use primary colors, like red or green, without losing brightness level, something that is common in other moving heads”.
An example of its versatility and ease is, as Shoenfeld points out, that “in a specific song he had all the Elation ACL 360 Matrix in white and I have put the Platinum FLX in red. I thought that the color white would be the predominant color on stage in that scene, but the truth is that the red beams projected by these moving heads could be seen perfectly”.
In this first edition, the Kaaboo Del Mar festival has had five outdoor stages and two indoor stages, with Chris Lisle as festival lighting designer and Erik Parker as lighting director, together with the company Visions Lighting, which has provided the lighting equipment for the main Trestles Stage and three others.
Twenty-four Platinum FLX have been installed on this main stage; equal number of ACLs 360 Matrix, and ten Platinum Wash ZFX Pro, all from Elation Professional. “We were looking for a balance between Spot and Wash devices, and the new Platinum FLX and ACL 360 Matrix seemed like very good options for this design.. We have also used Platinum Wash ZFX Pro to do general lighting on the stage”, Explica Erik Parker.
Many of the performances on this stage have taken place during the afternoons, Hence, Parker looked for devices with great luminosity and capable of offering recognizable effects.. “Platinum FLX offers me an extra point of luminosity in Beam mode -continued-. ACL 360 Matrix, It is a very effective device with many resources thanks to the control over each pixel and its continuous rotation of 360 degrees”.
Ten units of Elation Platinum Wash ZFX Pro were also used on the Trestles Stage, moving heads with nineteen RGBW LEDs 15 watts of power (for a total of 285 watts), as well as three LED zones with independent control and a zoom range of 9° to 43°.
Visions Lighting supply other fixtures from Elation Professional, like the Platinum SBX hybrid moving head, the high-brightness Platinum BX moving head type Beam and the Protron 3K Led strobe, in several of the stages at Kaaboo Del Mar. More than one hundred units of the IP-65 Elar Led Par were also installed. 108 Pair from this manufacturer, that illuminated more than a hundred palm trees within the festival grounds.
As Nook Schoenfeld assures, “What has impressed me most about these new Elation devices is the precision of the movement. Both in scenes with smooth movements and in others that are fast, I have not found any problems with the precision of gobos and effects.. All the cues I have programmed have been captured with great precision and everything has worked without a problem during the festival”.
