The University of Stuttgart modernizes its AV facilities helped by Crestron technology
Thanks to the IPTV solutions that have been implemented, Lectures can be transmitted from one room to another through the campus network and students can play recordings of their classes thanks to the video capture service that has been created.
The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading higher education centers in Germany., where they work 5.200 people and has capacity for more than 27.000 students.
Wireworx, in cooperation with the integrator Cancom, have undertaken a project to modernize the 63 classrooms and auditoriums of the University that includes the implementation of a video management platform and is managed from a centralized control system.
The goal was to incorporate a high-quality streaming solution to transmit lectures from one room to another and allow students to play class recordings from a video capture service.. To achieve these objectives, Wireworx and Cancom trusted the technology of Crestron, Specifically, they opted for the 3-Series 4K DigitalMedia Presentation System and Fusion monitoring and management solutions..
Thanks to the IPTV technology that has been implemented, Lectures can be transmitted from one room to another through the campus network and students can play recordings of their classes thanks to the video capture service that has been created.
In addition, Both companies also needed to implement a data management network that could transfer lecture content from one room to another on campus or allow students to play recorded lectures directly to their mobile device or computer from anywhere in the world..
“As a company responsible for planning, conception, management and implementation of all the technology that was needed for this project, We looked for a solution that would respond to the breadth of requirements that the university needed. We opted for Crestron's DigitalMedia and Fusion systems because we had already used them in other installations and they had given us very good results and we knew, that even in a project as large scale as this, “It would also work optimally”, explains Jürgen Kössinger from Wireworx.
Crestron Fusion technology enables remote support service, global device management and data collection and reporting. Working together with the video management platform Opencast2 and the learning platform Ilias, Students can record lectures and play them directly on their devices.
Lectures can also be live-streamed to other lecture rooms within each area of the university to create additional seating spaces for students..
Wireworx planned for Crestron control systems to work directly with the lecture recording system used by the University, Opencast Matterhorn, as a video server and the University's own capture agent, Tikca, to record incoming video streams. In this way, now all recordings are available for students on the Ilias e-learning platform.
This modern system allows multicast video streaming from conference rooms to capture agents, eliminating the need for cables. This hardware is used for streaming in two ways: first to the capture agents so that the recorded content can be viewed later, y, in second place, directly to other conference rooms.
Besides, A centralized control center has been established for full media access. Wireworx and the University of Stuttgart have developed a concept to create different VLANs, which means that all devices are integrated into their own network and, therefore, are accessible throughout campus.
Crestron DMPS control systems have been installed in all rooms along with DigitalMedia senders and receivers, allowing you to easily connect projectors and other devices.
“As a research-focused university, We demand to be exceptional not only in the fields of teaching, but also in the general environment and in the learning conditions for our students. A very important feature for this project was the modernization and sophistication of AV media technology.. The renovation had to adapt to the latest advances and the highest technological standards, which have certainly been achieved, especially in the establishment of a centralized control room that was key to this project”, explained Beatrix Kopahnke, Architect of the University of Stuttgart.
