The German startup Green City Solutions has designed, in collaboration with outdoor digital signage companies, the sustainable digital totem CityBreeze, equipping the first commercial DOOH display with natural moss filters that regenerate air quality, with player BrightSign integrated.

The first CityBreeze settled in Germany, close to the headquarters and the exclusive moss farm of Green City Solutions, and is currently not only expanding to other cities in the country, it also has a module in the Swiss town of Küsnacht since the end of last year..

Green City Solutions Breeze BrightSignThis innovative digital and sustainable advertising space equips a 75" LCD display, although models are already being designed in other smaller formats, and a media player (in this case from the manufacturer BrightSign), which is combined on its back with live moss and a filter technology innovative of the German company.

The specialist in outdoor digital advertising Neo Advertising, majority ownership of Goldbach in Switzerland, is the company that manages this first sustainable totem and plans to market more CityBreeze screens in this country.

As far as sustainability is concerned, a CityBreeze can clean, cool and humidify until 1.400 m3 air per hour, what corresponds to the air they breathe 2.800 people in that time slot. Active moss filters can delete up to the 82% of fine air dust and, therefore, improve the air in the vicinity in which it is located.

This is made possible by moss, a plant of more than 450 millions of years, with thin, thin sheets that offer a large absorption surface. The approximate 2 m2 of moss growing in the CityBreeze correspond to an active area of 60 m2 of this floor, through which fine dust from the air is metabolized.

Thanks to intelligent filter technology, moss is not only kept in perfect condition, but it binds moisture and releases it again by evaporation, creating a cooling effect in the nearby area. To this is added a IoT sensor that allows to collect and share air quality data in real time.

CityBreeze, developed in partnership with Goldbach, Visual Art and Deutsche Telekom, is the first dooh digital solution that refreshes the environment instead of heating it and that allows to combine digital outdoor advertising.

"By combining DOOH functionality with our biotechnology system to produce fresh, breathable air, we have created a compelling environmental product within the reach of many more city authorities., Explains Simon Dierks, Marketing Manager at Green City Solutions.

This system "greatly simplifies the planning process and makes it much faster," he adds.. Each city already has fixed locations for DOOH displays and they need to be replaced every eight to ten years.. Upgrading them with a unit that also purifies the air and lowers the ambient temperature rather than increasing it makes a lot of sense.".

As he stresses Christian Vaglio-Giors, CEO of Neo Advertising: "Sustainability and innovation in outdoor advertising are of vital importance to us; solutions that integrate harmoniously with their environment and contribute to improving the quality of urban life. With Green City Solutions and City Breeze, we are adding a format to our portfolio that fully meets our requirements.".

BrightSign in Regenerative DOOH Innovation

In this project, Green City Solutions has chosen the technology of media players from BrightSign, specifically the model Hd 224, for the environmental DOOH innovation of the CityBreeze units, as indicated in a statement by the company.

Advertising revenue generated by screens can be used to cover installation and maintenance costs, which makes CityBreeze very economical or even neutral in this regard. Units can be rented or purchased from Green City Solutions.

After the installation of the first City Breeze module in the Swiss town of Küsnacht, the company has three more units that will be operational in German cities shortly, and plans to sell between 100 and 150 by the end of this year.

Green City Solutions Breeze BrightSignGreen City Solutions has also introduced an optional module, equipped with a 43" LCD screen, controlled by a player BrightSign LS424 in your flagship product named CityTree, a larger filtration tower incorporating other elements, as electronic charging, information boards, seats, shading and smart services, that will add 5-G WiFi access points in the future.

Town halls and train stations are the main markets for both products, while CityBreeze is also of interest to conference venues, where it can be used to highlight information about events and exhibitions, which could generate a revenue stream.

"The 10% the execution time of the media on digital screens is reserved to explain how the moss system works and the health and environmental benefits it brings.. The rest can be used for commercial content or any other city information.".

Green City Solutions Breeze BrightSignFlexibility and ease of administration were key considerations in the selection of BrightSign players, that run BrightAuthor to create content. Green City Solutions also uses the cloud of BSN to schedule and load the contents.

Another key element that was taken into account, as Dierks adds, was the durability of the system. "The modules have a guaranteed service life of ten years, so we wanted something that was robust and low maintenance. In addition, CityBreeze has a slim design for flexible installation in urban areas and the BrightSign player is integrated into its housing; they don't have a fan and fit well in confined spaces without generating too much heat, which would reduce the overall cooling effect of the unit".

CityBreeze and CityTree modules can be installed anywhere with a power supply, but Green City Solutions wants them to be placed in spaces where they can have the greatest impact on public health., "as in areas with a lot of pedestrians coming into contact with traffic and pollution, which is also an ideal DOOH place to display messages. A win-win scenario.".
