Mark Murtra, president of Telefonica

The change in leadership responds to the operator's new shareholder structure and after almost nine years in office, José María Álvarez-Pallete has been replaced as president of Telefónica by Marc Murtra Millar.

The Board of Directors of Telefónica has renewed its presidency Accionaral, putting the company in charge Marc Thomas Murtra Millar, replacing José María Álvarez-Pallete.

The Board meeting approved the resolution of the contract signed with José María Álvarez-Pallete as executive president of the Board of Directors of Telefónica, requesting at the same time the resignation of his position as director. After his resignation, the highest body of Telefónica stated “its utmost gratitude to José María Álvarez-Pallete for the years of work and collaboration with the Telefónica Group and, especially, for the many services provided and for their extraordinary effort, dedication and contribution during his long professional career in the group”.

According to a statement sent by Telefónica to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) The change in leadership responds to the operator's new shareholder structure (in which the SEPI Industrial Holding Company y Caixa Criteria are the main shareholders) hence “some of its relevant shareholders have expressed the convenience of undertaking a new stage in the executive presidency”.

Murtra, at the head of Telefónica

Marc Murtra is an industrial engineer from the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers of Barcelona (ETSEIB) from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He also has a master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) by the Leonard School of Business at New York University.

The until now executive president of the Board of Directors of Indra is an independent director of Ebro Foods, member of its Executive Committee and president of the Audit and Control Committee, as well as advisor in the Turbo Propeller Industry.

Marc Murtra is a trustee of the Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions Banking Foundation of Barcelona la Caixa.

He began his professional career in the nuclear industry at British Nuclear Fuels in the United Kingdom., and continued at the strategy consulting firm Diamond Cluster, where he worked for large technology companies. He has dedicated several years to public service, where he was a specialist in Digital Strategy, Digital Transformation and Public-Private Partnerships. In this role he served as general director of Red.es, as well as that of Chief of Staff of the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce of the Government of Spain.

He has been managing partner of Closa Investment Bankers, as well as director of CREA Inversión, and has extensive knowledge of the technology sector.

He is an associate professor of Financial Management, Financial Economics and Master of Science in Finance and Banking at Pompeu Fabra University, where he teaches classes to Business Administration and Management degree students, degree in Economics and Master.
