Western University is University

The Reference series of EM Acoustics has proven to be the solution for the complex SEI event space of the Western University, offering optimal sound quality and maintaining a discreet visual profile.

Founded in 1878 in the city of ontario, London, Western is one of Canada's leading research-intensive universities.. Recently, has built a space for special events in the new Ronald D Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center. Schmeichel (BE).

The multipurpose room has been designed to accommodate a wide variety of functions, from keynote lectures to musical performances. However, the architecture of this space, with large concrete and glass ceilings presented significant acoustic challenges.

Western University's Classroom Technology Group partnered with audio integration experts and ultimately selected the EM Acoustics Reference series as your main solution.

Since the space was intended to host conferences, high-profile ceremonies and presentations, Implementation of a system that provided clear and consistent voice reinforcement throughout the main event space of the SEI building was prioritized, in addition to guaranteeing high quality music reproduction. A secondary concern was that the audio system needed to integrate with the modern architectural design of the space..

Chris Jordan, AV Systems Manager and Architect, Western University Classroom Technology Group, supervised the project.

The choice of EM Acoustics Reference Series loudspeakers was made after an extensive evaluation that included EASE modeling of several systems from multiple manufacturers.. This revealed that it was the best option for the space.

“You already knew the advanced engineering of the EM Acoustics Reference series, and the range stood out in this project for its consistent sound, optimal pattern control and flexible layout options”, afirma Dieter Kunz, DKE design and engineering consultant.

The support provided by EM Acoustics and its supplier, Contact Distribution, was another key factor.

“Contact Distribution's responsiveness and direct communication with the EM Acoustics team were a great help”, Kunz points out..

System design focused on EM Acoustics Reference Series loudspeakers, including a passive precision speaker 3 tracks and large format R12 in the center of the group, flanked by two R10. And compact reflex subwoofer S-18 high-power amplifier was positioned behind the group to offer additional low-frequency support.

Of the DQ10D advanced system amplifiers of 4 channels feed the configuration: one dedicated to the main operation and the other as a backup, crucial for hosting live events. The system also employed variable angle mounts from EM Acoustics and a custom rigging solution from DKE, designed to securely attach to a heavily reinforced concrete beam above the event space.

The architectural features of the SEI building posed several challenges for the project. Space includes reflective surfaces such as glass and concrete, a high roof and an asymmetrical seating arrangement, all of which complicates audio design. Besides, Placing large LED screens and a central podium required speakers to be mounted above the screens due to limited placement options.

“EASE modeling helped calculate coverage requirements and addressed how to minimize excess energy in the near glass surface of the second floor.”, while providing adequate coverage to the lower deck seats.”, says Kunz. “The mounting solution was also crucial, as the installation required custom mounting hardware to attach to the concrete structural beam with embedded rebar.”. A structural engineering firm reviewed and approved the designs to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

“The engineering of the Reference Series waveguide options allowed us to create a compact package that met the acoustic and aesthetic requirements”, comments Kunz. “The flexibility of providing two interchangeable high-frequency horns with two different coverage patterns was great to work with in conjunction with EASE modeling.”.

This project represents a major milestone for Western University, demonstrating its commitment to high-quality infrastructure and technology. “Projects like this set an important precedent for how universities can successfully integrate complex audiovisual systems”, emphasizes Bill Coons, director de Contact Distribution.

Complete installation exceeded expectations, with the Reference series offering high performance, with clear, detailed sound for both voice and music.

“The result is extraordinary”, Confirma Kunz. “The DQ10D amplifier factory presets for each speaker model gave me a first impression of disbelief on the analysis screen during testing. I have never seen such smooth response curves before tuning. After some basic adjustments, the remaining equalizer to adjust the system response was minimal”.

The SEI building can now move towards a future that will host various events, from academic conferences to cultural shows. The project demonstrates the value of careful planning, collaboration of experts and high-quality engineering. The EM Acoustics Reference series proved to be the ideal solution for the complex space, delivering exceptional sound quality while maintaining a discreet visual profile.
