f Ponte Vedra Concert Hall transforms its sound with WSDG

Ponte Vedra Concert Hall WSDG

Destination on musical tours that pass through North Florida (EU), This venue has renovated its room to improve its acoustic qualities, according to the design made by WSDG, and host the best artists on its stage.

Founded in 2011, Ponte Vedra Concert Hall (Pvch) has established itself as one of the musical venues in northern Florida. In order to attract more artists and audiences, SJC Cultural Events, responsible for this space, have completed an ambitious renovation of the room.

As part of this project, the organization has trusted the acoustic designers of the specialized company WSDG to improve the sound qualities of the space and the quality of their shows.

“When we found space in 2011, We couldn't imagine how much it would grow - remembers Gabriel Pellicer, headmaster and president of SJC Cultural Events-. “We believed we could create a cultural enhancement for the community that could also serve as a valuable stop for artists traveling along the Florida coast.”.

fourteen years later, Pellicer points out that they have “exceeded expectations in terms of the level of artists we could attract and the quality of the shows we could offer.”. We always knew we wanted to do more with the venue, So it was time to give him the opportunity to grow properly.”.

In addition to expand the size of the stage and capacity, The technical and acoustic improvements of the room have been a priority. “We were ready to upgrade sound system "and we wanted to make sure that both the artist and audience experience were improved," he says. Michael Livingston, senior production director of PVCH-. To that end, We brought together a team of consultants and local Florida companies to help us achieve these goals., as WSDG”.

Specialist WSDG partnered with local architecture firm Fisher | Koppenhafer architecture and interior design, as well as with the owner and system designer Stephen Unklebach, of AVL Productions, and with acoustic specialists Rulon International y EZ Acoustics, all companies based in Florida.

The WSDG Design Team, formed by the partner and business development director Sergio Molho; the partner and project engineer David Molho, and also a project and acoustic engineer Luis Hermida, was responsible for ensuring the best intelligibility and audibility in the room.

Since much of the music performed at PVCH is folk and blues roots music, Improving the acoustic characteristics of the room to elevate the experience of these genres was a key aspect of the project.

“It is an incredible building, with a great history and an important vibrational component, and we wanted to make sure that none of that was lost - says David Molho -. It was about making subtle changes, but important, that would improve the experience and strengthen the connection between the public and the artists”.

The WSDG team created a 3D model of the concert hall and proposed a series of 'invisible' acoustic solutions for artists and the public, but that would provide the desired results.

Since the ceiling of the room uses open cell foam for thermal reasons, WSDG took advantage of this feature to solve low frequency acoustic problems. Subtle, jitter-free diffusion was introduced along the side and back walls to control reflections towards the stage and audience, which has effectively reduced the fluctuating echo and optimized the sound quality of the room.

Added to this were the electroacoustic improvements provided by AVL Productions to install a new linear matrix L-Acoustics, to ensure a vivid sound experience with enhanced bass.

“We implemented a solution that was largely 'invisible' and took advantage of the existing infrastructure of the venue as much as possible to keep costs reasonable - continues Molho -. The diffusion on walls It was a pretty easy change., “but it had a great impact on the overall acoustic quality of the room and allowed us to achieve our goals”.

As for the sound itself, “WSDG achieved better control of the acoustics to adapt to the new line array and guarantee greater intelligibility throughout the venue.”. A new era for an important cultural destination”, subraya Livingston.

The main concert hall has increased its capacity by almost one 25%, which now allows it to house 1.100 people standing and 615 sitting, in addition to the size of the stage to accommodate larger groups of performers.
