After a three-year renewal, the Tallinn Municipal Theater (Estonia) reopens its doors with a completely modernized lighting system, designed by Focus Point Systems using solutions ETC.

Its seven scenarios, each with a distinctive architecture, now combine cutting-edge technology with a efficient lighting from an energy point of view and fully networked, ensuring flexible and reliable performance for every production.

Focus Point Systems, directed by Kalle Karindi, designed and implemented a complete lighting and effects package. Installation includes more than 350 Source Four LED Series 3, around 100 SolaFrame Studio, 100 fos/4, multiple ColorSource, five Eos Apex consoles 5 and architectural control Echo.Focus Point Systems.

The renowned lighting designer Margus Vaigur acted as an independent expert on the project, advising the Estonian Government on lighting investments. “I made it clear why a specialized solution, although slightly more expensive, is better than a cheaper universal option”, states. “The decision was simple: for theatrical lighting, ETC has always been my first choice”.

Reliability and simplicity

“ETC offers a fully integrated system from a single supplier”, Affirma Karindi. “The integration between luminaires, consoles and networks ensures reliability and simplifies upgrades. Every light, every sign, works in harmony in all seven scenarios”, added Vaigur.

He performance, he silent operation and the accurate color reproduction were the main priorities. Emil Callas, head of the theater lighting department, explains that “Source Four LED Series 3 brings incredibly natural skin tones and vibrant colors to all settings. SolaFrame Studio runs silently while being full-featured, and ArcLamp and Irideon fixtures provide dimmable architectural lighting for common areas and the main auditorium”.

Karindi highlights the SolaFrame Studio as an exceptional device: “It's completely silent, something essential for the intimate spaces of the City Theater. Features like zoom, the shutters, los gobos, the animation, the iris, the frost effect, prisms and a high CRI LED source that produces more than 10 000 lumens make it ideal for most scenarios ». He also praised the Source Four LED Series 3, calling it 'standard'’ world for theater stages, since "it is the one that comes closest to natural light among all the devices available."”.

Each of the seven scenarios presented unique architectural and technical challenges. “Each room has its own size, shape and lighting needs”, Kallas recognizes. “We needed lighting and controls flexible enough to meet all production requirements., while still being easy to handle. This system allows us to do just that”.

Reopening production, Iphienie. Agamemnon. Electra, revealed the system versatility, with complex scene changes, Dynamic lighting transitions and fully supported contrasting environments to immerse audiences. Florian Maier, regional director of ETC, concludes by stating that “this is the largest ETC installation in Eastern Europe to date. The collaboration between the theater, Kalle and ETC demonstrate how an integrated system of equipment, ETC consoles and software can achieve both technical excellence and artistic freedom”.
