BAA chooses NEC displays for the information service of the new Terminal 2 from Heathrow airport
NEC Display Solutions will supply more than 1.000 displays from XS to BAA Series, the British airport operator controlled by Ferrovial, for the flight information service of the new Terminal 2 from London Heathrow airport, which will be inaugurated in 2014.
The British airport manager BAA has selected NEC Display Solutions as a supplier of LCD screens to provide a reliable real-time passenger information service in the new Terminal 2 from Heathrow airport, in London (United Kingdom). The Japanese firm will supply the airfield with more than 1.000 LCD display systems, including public displays and Flight Information Display System controllers (FIDS) to ensure efficiency in all terminal flight information needs, ranging from check-in, departures and boarding gates, to the location of the security control and retail stores.
The new building will replace the old Terminal 2 and the Queens Building, built in the years 50, and is scheduled to open in the first half of 2014. It will have a capacity of 20 million passengers annually and represents the last step in the Heathrow airport transformation project, which began with the opening of the Terminal 5 in 2008, thus becoming one of the most modern and sustainable airports in Europe. As part of the project, NEC will provide more than 1.000 XS Series displays, They feature new LED backlight technology and are compatible with standard OPS slot-in embedded PC technology.
Richard Wilks, EMEA Aviation Business Development Manager at NEC Display Solutions, has commented: “Being part of such an important transformation project is very exciting.. FIDS are the heart of any airport management, but when choosing NEC XS series displays, Heathrow has demonstrated a strong will to continue delivering new terminal projects with a clear focus on environmental impact. NEC has a proven track record of working on mission-critical projects within the global airport industry and will ensure we deliver what BAA needs.”.
The design phase of the project is almost complete, while testing and configuration services have been started before the planned installation on the terminal, which will begin from November 2012.
Broad portfolio of airport solutions
The XS Series displays are the world's first displays to combine energy-efficient LED backlight technology and ambient light sensor technology to manage optimal brightness in real time., and PCs with integrated ultra-low-power OPS solt-in powered by Intel processors. These OPS-compatible slot-in devices allow BAA to standardize on a single Microsoft Windows framework integrated across all screen sizes from 32″ a 70″, significantly reducing the time and resources required to manage the 1.000 displays. With significant reductions in depth and weight, NEC's XS series is also one of the easiest displays to handle and install. This is particularly useful for video wall setups.
With the long-term reliability of the display system as a key element to be able to offer information to passengers in real time and the efficiency of the terminal, The BAA has recognized the benefits of features such as the display thermal management system and the use of LCD modules designed for superior performance. 24/7 consistent.
“For tens of millions of people every year, Heathrow is the first impression they have of the United Kingdom, and that is why it is so important that it be positive. NEC's XS series displays produce high-quality images that 24 hours of the day, los 365 days of the year, ensuring Heathrow continues to offer a high level of passenger experience “, Wilks concluded.
