NEC Display Solutions has presented Leafengine, software to create smarter digital signage solutions depending on the field to which it applies, developed in a joint R&D project with NEC Laboratories, which was shown at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and at ISE 2013.

Leafengine has been developed as a middleware that allows the development of smarter digital signage solutions, through a standardized interface that facilitates the connection with all types of sensors so that users can create the digital signage application they want.

Thorsten Wilm, Manager of Software Solutions and Future Technologies at NEC Display Solutions Europe, explains that "the new smart signage uses sensors to reproduce interactive content and personalize it., based on what the sensors detect, such as audience measurement, touch screens, proximity sensors or NFC or QR readers".

ConnectedSign Spooky Nook SportsAccording to this manager, the coding of the sensors of the different manufacturers and the changes of priorities when programming a digital signage device "can take a long time or be an inflexible screen that does not allow any modification. Leafengine is a middleware designed to simplify the complexity that is always associated with programming and help maintain signaling sensors, sensitive to the environment".

Once this software is activated, end users can modify content based on a combination of sensors, optimizing benefits and giving audience responsibility to the backup sensor.

Leafengine provides real-time interaction with minimal resources, "and it's designed to work together with playback software., which adds simplicity to the process and context-sensitive digital signage", Wilm points out.

In addition, it also makes it easier for app owners to deliver a wide range of smart digital signage solutions, including interactive trailers, audience measurement, loyalty systems and data mapping.

The software itself is a small Java-based application that can run on a Windows computer or in a Linux environment. Demand management and sensor connection is done through the portal Leafengine online, or a web page with an intuitive graphical user interface or an HTTP Rest Api.
