The manufacturer of programmable logic devices, Altera Corporation, has launched, in collaboration with software provider Eutecus, a new FPGA-based video analysis solution for video surveillance systems to be used with DVRs and NVRs.

Altera Corporation has announced a new standard definition video analytics solution (SD) four-channel for digital video recorders (DVR) and network video recorders (NVR) for surveillance systems. In association with Eutecus, Altera video analytics solution allows customers to analyze four channels of D1 480p/30fps video (frames per second) simultaneously using a single FPGA. Customers can add this capability to their existing SD surveillance investment without purchasing new cameras with built-in analytics..

Altera video analytics solution includes a Cyclone IV programmable gate array and video analytics engine (MVE) Eutecus multi-core that performs the analysis functions on the FPGA. This solution allows designers to replace multiple digital signal processors with a single FPG. Altera's FPGA-Based Video Surveillance Solution Finds Applications in Banking, education, the city, industry and government and in traffic surveillance systems.

Designers can customize their own video surveillance system through this FPGA-based video analytics solution. The Eutecus MVE IP combines parallel algorithms and multi-core coprocessors with multiple Altera Nios II cores integrated into a Cyclone IV FPGA. The solution comes with a software graphical user interface that allows designers to customize parameters and event detection rules for their specific applications.. Eutecus IP includes an application programming interface (API) robust interface that interfaces with a client's video management systems or can be used to develop custom GUI solutions.

FPGA based solution

Jeff Waters, senior vice president of the industrial division, Altera military and IT, has manifested: “High-performance FPGA-based video analytics solutions, Low cost and low power consumption from Altera and Eutecus have been designed to provide video surveillance system developers with a flexible platform that allows differentiation of the final system. Giving designers the ability to quickly and easily acquire hardware and IP allows our customers to get to market quickly and expand their analytics capabilities on existing surveillance equipment.”

Csaba Rekeczky, CEO and president of Eutecus, has stated: “Altera IV's Cyclone IV FPGA and its Quartus II software environment provide the ideal environment for the modular design of Eutecus' next-generation MVE solutions.. Video analytics clients can take advantage of the close collaboration between our companies, for both a single channel IP camera and multi-channel DVR/NVR products, taking advantage of modular, flexible and scalable IP cores from Eutecus and customizable low-cost, low-power FPGAs from Altera”.

Both four-channel D1 video analytics solutions and 1080p HD video analytics solutions are available through Altera. Altera offers a single-vendor model for the complete video analytics solution. The IP and FPGA can be purchased directly from Altera.
