Glastonbury 2015 once again relies on XL Video's immersive projection for Shangri-La
After the success of the event at last year's festival, XL Video has once again been the company chosen to carry out live 180º creative video projections in the innovative Shangri La area during the Glastonbury contemporary performing arts festival 2015.
Those responsible for the legendary Glastonbury festival that is celebrated annually in the summer in the English town of Pilton (Somerset – United Kingdom) They have trusted again in their edition 2015 in North American live mapping techniques XL Video to create the atmosphere of immersion in the Shangri-La area and its unique Heaven (more details in Digital AV Magazine) .
With a different construction from last year to form the unique Heaven, composed of a mosaic in wood 419 triangles mapped using photogrammetry to create two compositions: one in 2D and one in 3D, the project has been directed again by Nick Diacre, in collaboration with the technical direction of Christian Dickens, both from XL Video.
Media servers have been used for this production Avolites Ai, with the aim of “exploring your capabilities and testing your live mapping ability in an organic structure”, as they point out from XL Video, in addition to using it as a video playback engine and for the generation of live visuals.
The 2D mapping is provided as a template for content producers across the Shangri-La community to design their own visual effects.. Besides, Triple and double head capture systems are also used, remapped within patches in Avolites Ai to cover the entire structure at maximum resolution, as well as programming dynamic patches within this media server that map to a 3D model with audio, reactive effects and shading.
The entire system uses full redundancy with two of the S8 Ai servers, along with a Lightware DVI matrix switcher between primary and backup systems, as well as routing capture sources, for which four ImagePro HD video scalers from the Belgian firm are used Barco, plus an additional one that provides the signal in the DJ booth.
Besides, For the programming of the projectors and the source code control, the Widget Designer interface of Coolux, as it allowed multiple sources to be easily switched simultaneously and routing of the main and backup signals. The Heaven projection canvas in the Shangri-La area offered 7,680×1.080 pixels thanks to four Barco FLM HD20 projectors.
As Nick Diacre explained, “This year there has been a big improvement on previous years of Heaven with the introduction of custom content around the Avolites structure and teams, that have optimized pre-production and workflow for both mapping and content capture and delivery”.
