Meyer Sound provides Helsinki City Theater with a fully immersive audio experience
The theater in the Finnish capital has renewed its sound system with the installation of 124 powered speakers in the Big Stage room and others 50 systems in the Small Stage auditorium. This is completed with the incorporation of D-Mitri digital audio platforms and Space Map 3-D software..
Located in the capital of Finland, he Helsinki City Theatre has updated its sound systems with Meyer Sound to deliver complete immersive audio capability, adding a large number of speakers along with D-Mitri digital audio platforms and Space Map 3-D software.
The system on the Big Stage, with capacity for 947 seating, has been expanded to a total of 124 Meyer Sound self-powered speakers, and a system of almost 50 speakers on the Small Stage of 347 seating.
This investment in audio technology reflects Helsinki City Theatre's commitment to staying at the forefront of sound design, whether for theater, Broadway or experimental style musicals. “The theater is a laboratory where you must test new innovations. There is no right way or way as each show is new and different. “This new investment pushes the limits of what we can achieve with sound.”, comments Eradj Nazimov, Helsinki City Theater sound designer.
Los 124 Speakers installed on the Big Stage are individually addressable via dedicated outputs of the D-Mitri processors, allowing perfect control to create surround effects using Meyer Sound's Space Map 3-D software. This capability allows for the simultaneous, dynamic movement of multiple sounds anywhere in the theater..
At the same time, the new installation does not compromise the fundamentals of contemporary theatrical sound. Main proscenium system employs Broadway A/B configuration, used by theater for decades, with two completely separate speaker systems to keep the sum of signals in the acoustic domain. “The result is a much clearer and richer sound image”, explains Nazimov.
The main system for Big Stage is made up of 18 UPQ-1P speakers with three 900-LFC bass boosters (flown as a cardioid array) y 2 1100-LFC elements . The immersive surround system consists of 68 Meyer Sound full range speakers (28 UPJ-1P , 32 UPM-1P , 4 CQ-1 and 10 UP-4XP ) plus four USW-1P subwoofers.
The design of the system was carried out over a period of two years, with Jan Holm from Granlund Consulting collaborating with Nazimov and Helsinki integrator Studiotec.
Meyer Sound systems have been in continuous use in theater since 1986 when the installation of a UPA-1 system was necessary for the musical 'Cats'. Several speakers from the Big Stage have been repurposed to enable expansive and immersive sound capability in the Small Stage auditorium.
