The League's vision to reinvent swimming competition has been reflected in a huge modular set, with an Led surface of 67 square meters and a pixel pitch of 2,6 Mm, that adapts to the shape and angles of each site.

Pixel Artworks on ISL

Pixel Artworks has been the company responsible for creating the exhibition experience for the first world tour of the International Swimming League (ISL), A new swimming competition that seeks to reimagine the sport, bringing it to a new social audience to increase engagement and promote public health.

ISL's inaugural season began in Indianapolis in October and has gone through seven venues in the United States and Europe., to culminate with a grand finale at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas next 20 and 21 December.

ISL approached Pixel Artworks in October 2018 to create an audiovisual sports experience that would fit with the league's vision of reinventing swimming and bringing it to a new generation of spectators.

The result has been a huge modular set with an Led surface of 67 square meters and a pixel pitch of 2,6 mm that radically changes the shape and angles of each of the places. To create an engaging atmosphere throughout each event, Pixel Artworks has made a graphic video that acts as the narration of each ISL match.

"We had to design and build a modular design that fit all places., where each assembly and lighting point is different and complex in its own right. The whole had to be transportable and relatively flexible to fit various spaces. Audiences had to be considered, swimmers skip blocks, and accommodate for the unpredictable gaps of the size between the LED system and the pool", explains Daniel Postlethwaite, Production Manager, Pixel Artworks.

The accompanying sound design has been digitally composed to build a landscape that enhances the senses and intensifies the experience of the audience and viewer.. It has been designed to emphasize the narrative of the heavenly origins of swimming..

"ISL had a strong vision for production., and it already had a logo and a recognizable character that we brought to life through creative content. The opening animation of 90 seconds is abstract and inspired by illustrative animation like manga. We had to create content that could be exchanged quickly as each team also has their own animations.", comments Natalie Harvey, main producer of Pixel Artworks.
