The infrastructure of Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium, also known as Metro Stadium, has opted for technology Renkus-Heinz to renew sound infrastructure and eliminate the cost of renting equipment every time a big event is held.

This stadium, located in Barranquilla (Colombia), has the capacity to 47.000 football fans and is the headquarters of the Atlético Junior team. The facility was inaugurated in 1986 to host regional and international sporting events and, today, It is still the largest venue in Colombia.

With the popularity of the stadium, management had to rent audio equipment every time an important event was held. To remedy this situation, Metro Stadium management collaborated with local AV integrator Schaller Tech and audio manufacturer Renkus-Heinz to upgrade the sound system.

Greg Schaller, owner and systems engineer at Schaller Tech, worked in collaboration with Metro Stadium to design and install a state-of-the-art sound system that met the venue's requirements.

“The Roberto Meléndez metropolitan stadium worked to update it and be able to host Copa Sudamericana events”, explains Schaller. “To do it, “A good sound system that was well designed and installed was a great necessity.”.

At the beginning of 2020, the Schaller Tech team used the software Ease Acoustic Simulation to model the stadium and begin the design process. However, The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the project.

After returning to the initial idea, Schaller and his team have installed more than 80 air-conditioned speakers TX151, TX82 and TX62 from Renkus-Heinz.

“The TX series helps us achieve a balanced sound. There are speakers installed in the upper and lower rings of the stadium, and we can provide constant coverage to each seat”, afirma Schaller.

Schaller explains how Metro Stadium opted for passive versions without power of the speakers of the serie TX to reduce weight, as some have been mounted at a height of up to 20 metros. A set of four Linea Research high-power amplifier racks have been fixed to the stadium ceiling and are connected via fiber and a Dante audio network..
