Peter Gabriel bets on SSL live consoles on his tour
The artist Peter Gabriel's team has relied on two Live L550 Plus consoles and one L650 for the tour of his latest album. Solid State Logic (SSL), plus a compact SiX system.
For years, Peter Gabriel, British singer-songwriter and producer, owner of Real World Studios, y SSL They maintain a solid and ongoing relationship, since this manufacturer's systems have become essential in the singer's productions and in his recording studio.
As you remember Dee Miller, Peter Gabriel's long-time monitor engineer, "curiously, I was the first person to use the consoles SSL Live on tour and have been using this table since then. It sounds absolutely stunning and I think it is the best sounding mixer in the world.”.
This is also emphasized Richard Sharratt, Gabriel FOF engineer since 2010: “are you aware of the differences when you use a different table and switch back to SSL. I love the design of L550+, you can reach everything easily and the internal effects are really good, since Peter's voice is a challenge due to its dynamism and I use many of its functions”.
Specifically, Peter Gabriel's equipment used for the tour of the artist's latest album two Live L550 Plus consoles at FOH and monitors and an L650 for the artist's personal monitor mix, in addition to a SSL SiX compact for mixing keyboards on stage, de SSL, whose products it sells central media.
Tour production setup includes 128 MADI channels for recording. “Peter insists record sound check at shows every time he's on stage, which have long been a central part of the creative workflow, both on the road and in the studio”, asegura Sharratt
Gabriel's songs range from a solo voice accompanied by piano to a full band performance. To handle the transition from one song to the next, Sharratt uses “different scenes or snapshots for every song. The scene sends MIDI to the Bricasti and changes all internal effects, equalizers and VCA design”.
Another advantage that Dee Miller highlights, which also makes extensive use of SSL Live's scene recovery capabilities, “Everything is automated.”:
silences, groups, shipments, equalizers… Peter is quite particular and a lot of things happen in his music, so the only way to do it is to use them”.
