Redruth's Regal Theater adopts Martin Audio's FlexPoint system
With capacity for 500 spectators in an impressive art deco building from the 1970s 1930, the Regal Theater in Redruth (United Kingdom) recently contracted with local company TruCru the renewal of theater audio, replacing an archaic system with a FlexPoint solution Martin Audio.
The new public address system had to demonstrate the versatility necessary to accommodate a wide variety of shows, from am dram performances, tours, nationally recognized operatic societies and comedians, with a high sound pressure level. And what is more important, I had to remove hotspotting preexisting that was evident in a difficult building with a stall level and a roof “staggered” acoustically difficult.
Although TruCru had extensive experience specifying the manufacturer's popular CDD series, In this case both the project director, Toby Bodman, as Ben Tucker, from Martin Audio Product Support Group, agreed that the shorter throw of the FlexPoint point source loudspeaker would provide a more suitable solution, with an exit and dispersion better adapted to the room and the inclination of the balcony.
When evaluating the pre-existing system, Bodman points out that “some parts didn't work at all or had been improvised to make them work. Due to these problems, coverage had been very patchy. That's why, the client wanted not only the best system for the entire space, but one that offered the most uniform coverage possible”.
Any doubt that FlexPoint would be able to reach every corner of the theater was immediately dispelled in the demonstration phase. “Any skepticism disappeared immediately, and even I was a little surprised at how far he threw and, in general, I was surprised by its overall performance.. In fact, The predominant comment from those who have heard the system is how much the sound has improved. The only thing I was worried about was a very fast reflection at the back of the bottom of the balcony, but the effectiveness of the system is such that it is not noticeable at all”.
How was this solution achieved?? with two FP12 left/rightmounted at the top of the proscenium to cover the audience, and another pair below for most of the stalls coverage, of the FP8 smaller ones take over in the center of the stalls, while four FP4 compacts are placed along the front edge of the stage, to cover the pit area and the first rows of the stalls.
One by subwoofers SX215 stacked on each side of the stage occupy the positions of the subwoofers above and, finally, Six Blackline X15Bs have been installed for stage monitoring.
TruCru worked around existing rigging points and ran new cabling, although the signal is still analog domain. A pair of dedicated DX4.0 system controllers store the DSP.
