Meyer Sound's Pearson Theater Showcases Transformation and Audio Excellence
The update of this emblematic theater Meyer Sound, located at its headquarters in Berkeley (California – EU) Set up with new Astrya cinema screen speakers, the latest generation of the Constellation acoustic system and a team Dolby Atmosphere of 33 canales.
Since its inauguration in 2004, he Pearson Theater, named after the audio industry pioneer Don Pearson, is used as a real and practical environment in which the manufacturer Meyer Sound shows its latest technological advances and integration with third parties.
Located in the headquarters of this manufacturer in the Californian city of Berkeley, this enclosure, of 457 m2 and 55 seats, was designed as a acoustically variable space to be used in different applications, from film screenings to lectures and musical performances.
Almost two decades later, Meyer Sound started in January 2025 a technological transformation Pearson Complete, that just ended, to respond to the new needs of the audio industry and other applications.
“We approach these improvements as our customers would when build complete theater or film production spaces -explains John McMahon, vp. senior de Meyer Sound-. All essential systems have been renewed, which places Pearson in the category of the highest performing spaces of its type in the world”.
To carry out this important technological update, the new cinema screen speakers Astrya, and theatrical Dolby Atmos system 33 canales and the latest generation of the acoustic model Constellation, with the aim of “transforming this space into a world class screening room and reflect the excellence of the audio”.
New standard in audio
At the core of this update are the new cinema screen speakers Astrya-140 de Meyer Sound, that occupy the LCR positions, and offer ultra-precise time alignment and optimal clarity across its wide frequency range, of 30 Hz a 20 kHz.
Based on concentric mid/treble drivers, This advanced speaker model has network support AES67 and a fully digital signal path, facilitating the audio over IP workflows.
“Astrya is going to be a truly transformative product for the film industry,” he says. Jay Wyatt, film and residential program manager at Meyer Sound-. Pearson is now powered by an audio-over-IP distribution infrastructure. “It is the only theater system I have been involved in that has all speakers powered by IP and a fully digital path preserved from source to cabinet.”.
Immersive sound system
For cinematic sound reproduction, its managers have carried out a Theatrical Dolby Atmos design, with a sound field of 33 canales, Backed by a diverse range of Meyer Sound products.
Astrya-140 speakers anchor LCR positions, while point source equipment Ultra-X42 y X20 are used for surrounds sides, and the models Ultra-X40 y X23 for the superiors. In the low frequency effects channel, of the elements of control 2100-LFC and another very low frequency pair VLFC They work together to extend the visceral impact of bass up to 13 Hz.
Latest generation variable acoustics
The updated system Constellation from the Pearson Theater presents advanced algorithms and harness the power of the integrated digital audio platform Nadia, which provides greater resolution and improves flexibility with more discrete areas.
The system of 34 speakers has been upgraded to ultra-compact installation models UP-4slim, and the omnidirectional microphones have been replaced with twenty-four miniature cardioid units, in line with Constellation update.
New system meets speaker and microphone density guidelines for Constellation's voice lift implementation, that improves the intelligibility of the spoken word throughout space, from both presenters and audience members, no need for handheld microphones.
“Updating to a current design methodology, with new speakers and a more modern digital platform was the driving force - recalls Pierre Germain, director of Constellation at Meyer Sound-. As a result, the system sounds richer, lush and enveloping. We have more acoustic power than ever, with better coverage and overall clarity thanks to our latest line of speakers and improved VRAS algorithms”.
Most of the speakers that have been installed in the Pearson theater are equipped with Milan, with the exception of UP-4slims models, required for Meyer Sound Constellation.
“With our Nadia processor using AVB Milan as its native audio network,” says Germain.- we can directly connect the processors Galileo Galaxy and Nadia I/O units, which gives us flexibility in the way we drive the entire system”.
Comprehensive design
The Pearson Theater exhibits and demonstrates the comprehensive Meyer Sound capabilities, from design to manufacturing and final product, all under one roof. “Visitors see our process up close: They go through a door where on one side we design the drivers and, a few meters, we make them. Who else can tell that story?”, supurura McMahon.
The Pearson Theater reopened its doors last 16 March with a projection of Megalopolis, of Francis Ford Coppola, showcasing the room's enhanced audiovisual capabilities. “What I like most about this space is that it is so good that it 'disappears'. When we make projections, technology immerses you completely, recreating the director's intention so deeply that you get lost in it all. It is a powerful experience”, concludes.
