Carousel and BrightSign power visual content for Ingenium museums
Visitors who go to the museums of Genius in Ottawa enjoy themed dynamic images and video content on 50 screens located inside and in the kiosks outside. For this project the software was used Carousel Cloud, as well as multimedia players and the BSN.Cloud service of BrightSign.
The parent company of three Canadian museums, Genius, has achieved greater freedom in digital signage content management and network expansion thanks to its transition to a comprehensive cloud-based architecture.
Driven by the software Carousel Cloud, los media players and BrightSign's BSN.Cloud service for secure management of media players, Ingenium's AV/IT team has scaled 15 connection points on the campus Canada Science and Technology Museum a 50 in its three museums.
Based in Ottawa, Ingenium owns and operates three museums in Canada: Aviation and Space, that of Agriculture and Food, and Science and Technology. Carousel and BrightSign components share a common IT infrastructure with cloud-native connectivity between all points, allowing operators to manage the network remotely using software, with secure content distribution and seamless technology integrations.
The Canadian Science and Technology Museum campus also includes the At the Center of Genius , a repository of artifacts and files open to the public that is part of the Carousel Cloud network.
In addition to public signage, Carousel and BrightSign deliver corporate content to employees and visitors on seven screens located at Ingenium headquarters.
“I worked at the systems integration company that installed the initial Carousel servers and corresponding displays in the staff cafeterias”, comment Brian Wragg, Audiovisual specialist of Ingenium. “We install Windows media players along with those servers. Later, I joined Ingenium when the Science and Technology museum underwent a major renovation, which has included digital signage for visitor information and visual content. We decided to continue with Carousel, but we migrated to BrightSign for media players”.
Ingenium went with Carousel mainly because of its ease of use. “Our creative services team handles most of the creation, scheduling and uploading content, and other users have access to specific areas. Now that we have migrated to Carousel Cloud, there is a whole new level of simplicity and harmony throughout the network. BrightSign players are very reliable. We can synchronize the content between them and stream content from indoor to outdoor screens without having to change the inputs of the players. BSN.Cloud gives us that freedom and allows us to manage, Monitor and control all players remotely”, Wragg adds..
Visitors to Ingenium's three Ottawa museums enjoy dynamic themed images and video content in 50 screens located inside, as well as the kiosks that are outside.
The Carousel Cloud network features a wide variety of content from different museums and areas. All have admission information screens that show prices, membership promotions and brief summaries of daily programming.
The Museum of Science and Technology includes a set of five screens that provide general information about current and upcoming events at the three museums, as well as maps to guide visitors.
The network incorporates interactive screens that invite visitors to submit photos for display at the Museum of Science and Technology and the Aviation and Space Museum.
The BrightSign devices installed behind each screen are players that allow you to display 1080p and 4K content.
“At the Ingenium Center we have numerous objects of great national historical importance, as well as excellent images of our staff working with objects and prototypes for the interactive exhibitions”, explica Wragg. “For this reason, It made sense to present them in 4K so that visitors can see them on a 65 inches. Besides, we will add a 4K player to project an image of 12 meters wide on the façade of the Aviation and Space Museum”.
Regarding exteriors, BrightSign players have been installed in climate-controlled, airtight enclosures to accommodate Ottawa's variable weather conditions.
“We have had one installed outside for three years without any performance problems”, Wragg commented.. “We recently added three kiosks with BrightSign players outside the Food and Agriculture Museum and expect reliable operation during their first winter.”. The museum spans several buildings, and these screens facilitate orientation and provide information about exhibitions and outdoor activities..
The transition to a cloud network has also simplified the work of the IT department and the creative team, who usually works from home. “They no longer have to transfer files from 500 MB to local server via VPN, and they can preview new content without the need for a physical player”, Wragg says.. “Carousel Cloud manages everything efficiently, and the IT network manager loves that Carousel consumes minimal bandwidth and doesn't require a VPN. Ultimately, Carousel Cloud makes creation easy, programming and modifying content, and BrightSign makes it happen with exceptional reliability”.
