Mappping Disney Destiny

Video Systems Design, a Florida company with more than 15 years of experience in the cruise and theme park industry, using technology from the Canadian VYV Corporation specialized in visualization solutions at the service of art and entertainment, achieves a milestone by mapping’ the new Disney Destiny cruise ship in full sail with 30 laser projectors.

Mappping Disney DestinyFor the project, they used four media servers with a resolution greater than 6840×1200, 15 IR cameras next to 38 IR emitters y almost two kilometers of fiber optics. Both the calibration as alignment and the content adjustments for the spectacular projection were quite a challenge, since for the first time a mapping on a moving ship.

Although it was not the first time that mapping was projected on a cruise ship - as happened at the baptism of the MSC World Europe in Doha in 2022 o en el Minghua, enld Sea World Sheko (Shenzhen, China)—, This time the challenge was to follow the movement of the ship as it sailed through Port Everglades (Florida), accompanied by a projection show, drones, lights and music live.

Disney Destiny, whose maiden voyage will take place on 20 November, is the third ship in Disney Cruise Line's Wish class, after the Disney Wish (2022) and Disney Treasure (2024). The ship, of 144.000 tons and an estimated investment of about 900 million dollars, has 1.254 cabins with capacity for 4.000 passengers and a length of more than 340 metros, which served as a canvas during the mapping show.

Los Photon servers from VYV Corporation have been key to achieving the largest projection made to date on a mobile surface. “The calibration of the projectors, The alignment and content adjustments were completed on an extremely tight deadline and would not have been possible without the talent of the VYV Corporation team.. Many people with a high professional level have participated in this achievement”, stood out Aaron Counterman, Director of Video Systems Design, Disney Live Entertainment, and LinkedIn.

Stefanie Mullen, Senior Visual Effects Designer en Disney Live Entertainment, recognizes that “one of the greatest challenges of any projection we carry out, either at Cinderella Castle or at the Tree of Life, is that we do not work on a flat surface. So, What's so special about the screening on Disney Destiny? It's absolutely gigantic! “It has been truly crazy.”.

“The canvas we worked on was very long and very narrow, “But we came up with different ideas that we developed into very different concepts.”, concludes.
