New World Symphony (NWS), one of the leading orchestral institutions in the world for the training of classical musicians, incorporates a Quantum225 Pulse console Digico to mix orchestral and other performances that are projected on the Wallcast screen of 650 square meters located in the outdoor listening area of SoundScape Park.

Co-founded by director Michael Tilson Thomas and Lin and Ted Arison 1987 as a training orchestra for young musicians and a bridge between school and professional orchestras, the NWS moved in 2011 a su actual campus New World Center, designed by Frank Gehry, en Miami Beach. That same year, the symphony acquired its first Digico console, a D1 Live.
Since then, the New World Center has remained a DiGiCo facility, to which a Quantum225 Pulse has recently been added. In combination with a sound system Meyer Sound Constellation, Patrons can spend the afternoon picnicking on the lawn while beautiful classical music fills the warm night air.

After many years of reliable service, The New World Symphony's original D1 Live consoles gave way to three consoles Quantum5, used for FOH, monitors and a spare, as well as a console SD9 used in teaching rooms.

Roberto Toledo, NWS Audio Services Director, which just won a Suncoast Emmy Award for Live Audio Mixing of Wallcast Concerts, states that “as we were already very familiar with the Digico platform, I decided on a Quantum225 console because I knew it would give me all the creative freedom I needed to be able to mix the way I wanted.. When I do a live broadcast, basically what I do on the console is almost identical to how I mix in a studio, for what the Q225 offers me, in a certain sense, a study experience. I consider it an outdoor studio., like an outdoor control room. For Wallcast concerts, we mix through the console and then send the outputs to the Meyer Constellation system at SoundScape Park. This offers the public an incredible experience”.

Processing power

Toledo highlights that Digico's sound transparency is perfect for classical music, and that certainly extends to the new Quantum225 Pulse. But he's also a big fan of its Quantum processing power, in particular of the Mustard compression. “Literally, I have run out of Mustard channels, I'm using them all!”, joke. “I love mustard. It gives us the option to use parallel compression, which I think is the best for classical music in this environment. Allows me to compress as needed, but it is such a subtle sound that it offers a lot of control over the compression effect. It allows me to balance it how I want., while if you used traditional compression, I should be more careful, because it's easy to miss”.

in classical music, many people don't like using compression at all”, duck. “I'm not afraid to use it, but I want to make sure that the audience does not hear a super-compressed sound and that they hear the real dynamics, even when I get the control I need for my mix. It's compressed, but it doesn't sound compressed. And that's what Mustard offers me”.

Digico technology has ensured the New World Symphony and its listeners that what they hear is as modern as possible. «With Digico, I really feel like I'm mixing in a studio, even outdoors, And that's a fantastic feeling.", concludes Toledo.
