SRB Pro renews the lighting of the UTEP auditorium with Elation and Obsidian

Distributor Elation Lighting, SRB Pro has renewed the lighting system of the Magoffin auditorium, at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), with a comprehensive Led solution from this manufacturer, which is controlled with an NX4 console Obsidian Control Systems.

With a capacity for 1.162 spectators, he Magoffin auditorium, the largest on the campus UTEP, hosts a wide variety of events, from plays and concerts to academic ceremonies, comedy shows and productions that require broadcast-quality lighting.

SRB Pro, distributor of Elation in the southwestern United States, was selected by the university to design the complete stage power and lighting upgrade, which required a system flexible enough to cover multiple types of events, easy to operate and capable of offering a accurate color reproduction, with full spectrum colors for live shows and real targets for broadcast.

From halogen to LED

In this project, SRB Pro has replaced the old dimming system and the ellipsoidal and Fresnel halogen luminaires of the seventies with modern and energy efficient Led solutions. The new equipment includes ellipsoidal projectors, Fresnel, moving heads and lights for cyclorama, expanding creative possibilities and ensuring chromatic consistency throughout the stage.

Scott Brown, project manager at SRB Pro, worked in collaboration with Stephen de la Torre, Elation Market Director, who participated in the specification of 11 luminaries KL CYC L; 48 KL Profile FC; 18 KL Fresnel 8 FC; 6 Pulse Panel y 6 Fuze Max Profile.

The management of the new lighting system is carried out through a console Obsidian NX4, supported by five nodes Netron NS8 IP, of the EP4 and one EP2, that ensure reliable and stable data distribution in productions.

Chromatic uniformity

All KL series luminaires installed, together with Fuze Max Profile moving heads, incorporate the RGBMA color mixing engine de Elation, ensuring uniform color reproduction throughout the system.

The system allows from intense saturated colors to subtle pastel tones and precise whites, with a high CRI index which guarantees excellent reproduction both on camera and live. The new facility has been designed to offer maximum operational flexibility.

Two FOH bars incorporate twenty-four KL Profile FC full color mixing projectors, capable of covering the front of the stage in any shade or used for special effects and gobos. Another twenty-four Elation KL Profile FC, installed in a third bar on the stage, are intended for overhead lighting, backlights and specific uses of each production.

Los KL Fresnel 8 FC provide soft, diffuse full-spectrum lighting, while linear KL CYC L models, installed on the backdrop, ensure homogeneous washing of the cyclorama.

For quick and uniform color baths, The Pulse Panel provides a versatile solution with high visual impact. Fuze Max Profile moving heads, con zoom, double gobo wheel and animation, They complete the system by providing movement, speed of positioning and versatility in trimming.

Broadcast quality and comprehensive control

As a truly multipurpose venue, The auditorium also hosts events that require camera-friendly lighting, like graduations, live broadcasts and audiovisual productions.

“It was essential to have a system with high CRI and flicker-free operation to guarantee consistent video results,” Brown recalls.. “Elation products offer accurate reproduction of skin tones and the level of brightness needed for any on-camera event.”.

SRB Pro opted for Obsidian system-wide management solutions, specifying the NX4 console for its advanced control surface and motorized faders. The Netron nodes installed in each bar ensure fluid and uninterrupted communication between the luminaires and the console.
