“Memory” by Vioso and MP-Studio: 50 meters of videomapping from a historic site
The memorial complex of the defenders of the city Stara Zagora serves as a canvas for the “Memory” videomapping, a project led by Vioso y MP-Studio with solutions Epson which served to commemorate the Bulgarian National Day.
To reach the precision level required of this mapping in which the content seemed to emerge directly from the sculpture itself, MP-Studio developed a full photogrammetric model of the monument using drone scanning (RealityScan for Unreal Engine). This technique allowed the creation of a detailed digital twin that was imported into ProjectionTools by Vioso. Next, reference markers were applied to key elements such as soldiers and flag, which allowed the digital model to be accurately correlated with the structure of the real world
The installation used three projectors 20.000 lumens and 6 of 16 000 lumens of Epson, with a resolution of 1920 × 1200 by projector. Using ProjectionTools' camera-based workflow, MP-Studio completed the warping, Complete geometric alignment and fusion in just one 15 minutes.
Playback was managed by a single server Anystation 4K de Vioso, that he executed Exaplay 3 with HAP encoded content. The nine projectors were controlled from this compact system using splitters, which allowed the creation of a synchronized canvas and high resolution without the need for a multi-server infrastructure.
Marin Dimitrov, of MP-Studio, explains that “the combination of photogrammetry and camera-based calibration allowed us to achieve precise alignment in very detailed geometry, while the speed of the workflow was critical given the limitations of a single-day event. Running the entire system from a single compact server also significantly simplified deployment, without compromising performance”.
From Vioso's perspective, Raul Vandenburg, executive director, duck: “We are very satisfied to have supported MP-Studio in a project of this magnitude and importance.”. This demonstrates how combining camera-based calibration with efficient media playback can simplify complex projection mapping workflows., while still offering the precision required for demanding architectural surfaces. “That we have been entrusted with a role in a facility of such cultural importance is something we greatly value.”.
