Sony is experimenting with 3D sound through binaural sound, a multidimensional journey that combines photography with three-dimensional sound to break down creative boundaries and create stories through sound.

Sony It has been proposed to bring an image to life using a binaural sound layer “3-Dimensional” with the help of sound designer Nick Ryan and winner of a Sony World Photography Award, Andrew Scriven, to produce a multidimensional journey in which the viewer can see and hear what a rock star feels when preparing to go on stage at the O2 Brixton Academy in London.

With this project, Sony has brought together the worlds of audio and photography in a unique way by combining the vivid photographs of Andrew Scriven and using the technique of binaural sound “3-Dimensional”. But this technique is not just for experts.. Throughout the duration of the project Sony will invite people of all levels of technical knowledge to create their own soundscapes with a step-by-step guide produced together with Nick Ryan.

The piece was developed using the binaural sound technique, with which the sound is recorded using two microphones separated from each other the same distance that exists between the ears of an adult person, to create a sensation where the listener hears the same as if they were actually in the room with the artists, instruments or sounds they are listening to.

For this project the sound designer has used a “artificial recording head”, a type of mannequin head to which microphones were attached to each ear to record the sounds that a real person would hear. A binaural recording is intended to be played using headphones, and cannot be carried properly over stereo speakers.

All content was recorded using Sony equipment such as a Sony SRW 9000PL HD video camera, Sony MDR headphones 7509 and a Sony PCM-DM50 recorder, as well as consumer products such as a Sony Tablet S, a Sony VAIO S Series, a Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray mobile phone, un walkman MP3 Sony NWZ-A865 (with small Bluetooth headphones), a Sony Alpha A77 SLT digital camera with a standard Sony lens – DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM and a Sony PCM-M10 portable recorder.
