Audi digitizes the rearview mirror of the new R8 e-tron model
Audi will introduce the electric version of the R8 sports model at the end of the year, the R8 e-tron, a new digital interior rearview mirror system that incorporates a display 7,7 inches from Samsung that works in conjunction with a camera, replacing the usual cabin mirror.
Audi strengthens the links between the technology and automotive industries by incorporating a digital screen in the electric version of the R8 e-tron model that, from the hand of a camera located in the back of the car, replaces the conventional rearview mirror inside the cabin. Audi engineers proposed an alternative that includes a display 7,7 inches AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) developed in partnership with Samsung which has the shape and is positioned where the conventional rearview mirror would go.
According to Audi, The organic materials used in the display are self-illuminating at low voltage and do not require backlighting, while the screen is more energy efficient, Thinner and lighter than conventional LCD monitors. When night falls or when the vehicle passes through a tunnel, For example, An intelligent control system prevents glare caused by other vehicles' headlights, with a controller with which the driver can dim or deactivate the screen at any time. Audi is also working on incorporating additional information on this screen in the future..
Ultra-light camera
The screen receives the live video signal from a small camera placed in the rear just below the third stop light. The small, ultra-light camera is housed in an aerodynamically optimized housing, which is heated to low temperatures. It uses a lens with a diameter of only a few millimeters and covers a field of vision considerably larger than that covered by a conventional rearview mirror.. Connection times are just a few milliseconds, regardless of ambient temperature.
The production version of the Audi R8 e-tron would make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September and go on sale at the end of the year.
