Sharp Corporation has announced that it has reached an agreement with Pixtronix Inc., una filial de Qualcomm Incorporated, to develop and commercialize low-power color MEMS displays incorporating IGZO technology (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide).

Pixtronic MEMSSharp Corporation has signed an agreement with Pixtronix Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, for the development of MEMS displays (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems). MEMS displays, which will be developed jointly by the two companies, will use ultra-fine process technology and will be manufactured on existing display infrastructure, with features including high color reproduction and low power consumption. The development for the commercialization of MEMS displays will be carried out thanks to the integration of Sharp's IGZO technology and Pixtronix's MEMS display technology.

This joint development will establish its facilities at Sharp Corporation's LCD panel plant in Yonago (location: Yonago city, Tottori prefecture, Japan), with the aim of developing technology for commercialization. The development of the new generation of screens and the necessary investment will begin immediately. At the time when the development of the technology for commercialization is considered feasible, will lead to the next phase, which will consist of the implementation of the equipment with the objective of achieving mass production of the technology.

With this agreement, The two companies will consider expanding their collaboration on Qualcomm Technologies chipsets, Inc., a 100% owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and in IGZO image reproduction technology to achieve low energy consumption and higher performance in mobile terminals.
