The musical Come from Away has been a box office record on both Broadway and the West End. To provide discreet, high-quality sound reinforcement in the show, sound engineer Gareth Owen decided to use the ultra-compact SK beltpack transmitter 6212 of Sennheiser for all cast members.

blankThe musical Come from Away composed by Irene Sankoff and David Hein is a story with different plots that talks about the inhabitants of Gander (Newfoundland) and some of the 70.000 passengers of the 38 Flights diverted to this small Canadian town in the week after the attacks of the 11 September. From the first performances with daily fill-outs in San Diego and Seattle in 2015, the musical has continued to attract a mass audience at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatres on Broadway and Phoenix in London's West End..

recently, the musical won four Olivier Awards 2019 in the categories of best new musical, Best Choreography, Better music and sound design. The sound design award went to Gareth Owen, being his third Olivier since 2014.

After a first test with the cast of London in Dublin, Owen estimated that the traditional transmitter flask with microphone was too big.. "The ideal thing in any musical is that the transmitting flasks and microphones are invisible., A fairly recurrent problem. For this show, Artists must carry two mics because they are on stage all the time, So we were under a lot of pressure to find something smaller.".

The option was the SK model 6212 by Sennheiser, an ultra-light digital beltpack mini-transmitter compatible with Digital systems 6000 and Digital 9000. It's as small as a matchbox (63×47×20 mm), dumbbell 112 grams and offers 12 hours of operation on a single battery charge.

"The battery life of the SK 6212 has meant a radical change in production and testing. We can work a whole day on a single charge, which allows us to save time to concentrate on other matters... The flask is much easier to hide and is so resistant that we are not afraid of it being damaged in energetically choreographed performances like this.", comments Reese Kirsh, responsible for sound of the London production of Come from Away.

Since its premiere, The London version of Come from Away has paved the way for the US tour, which is following suit and has already changed the systems it has been using so far for the new SK transmitters 6212 by Sennheiser, brand that distributes in Spain Magnetron. Broadway and Toronto will likely follow suit., just like Australia.
