Shenzhen Leiting Digital Entertainment is one of China's leading video game publishers, with more than 45 millions of gamers across the country enjoying its mobile and PC releases.

The company employs many video game enthusiasts with a simple mission: Produce "unique and cool video games". In its commitment to creating end-to-end immersive experiences for its users, Leiting recently commissioned an audio studio 5.1.4 for video games based on Genelec Smart Active Monitors.

blank"An audio studio is a must for a video game company," explains game composer and sound designer Knuckles (Jianyu) Zhang, who has directed the project of the study (in the image)-. Our requirements are quite special: What we want is not just a recording studio, or mixing or post-production. To be precise, what we want is a 'Game Sound Lab'’ to help us in the conceptual design of video games".

Originally conceived as a surround sound studio, the acoustic design and construction of the project has been carried out by Qiao Zhenyu of Huanyu Acoustics, who convinced Zhang to make it completely immersive.

"I knew that a lot of video games had already used the format 5.1 to produce sound. But Qiao suggested doing it 5.1.4 adding the four height channels. That's when I realized that immersive audio technology is no longer something new, and us, as creators, We have to learn to master this format.".

The studio hired the system integrator DMT to install a pair of Genelec 1234A as your primary stereo monitor system, with an immersive system 5.1.4 comprising eleven 8330A nearfield models in all positions, which are completed with a 7370A subwoofer.

All monitors were supplied in a polar white finish, and the system was configured and calibrated by DMT using GLM loudspeaker management software.

Knuckles (Jianyu) Zhang has been working with audio monitors and, In fact, he avoided the Genelec in his early years, believing them to be too flat. "I used several monitors to evaluate my work in different rooms. Sometimes, They sounded good in my own room, But the results would often vary when listening to material in other spaces. So I was starting to doubt what I was hearing.".

In this situation, "That's when I realized I needed a genuinely truthful monitoring system to do my job. Genelec's sound is very reliable. You can trust what is being heard and what is being believed with them. When I use the 1234 I can immediately assess the quality of the mix.".

Knuckles is convinced that immersive audio is the format of the future for game developers. "In recent years, The national video game industry has placed greater importance on the sound experience. Looking at the international market, We're discovering more and more big-budget video games that use surround audio to create the sound experience. Sometimes, We just want to go into another world and forget about real life for a while.".
