After years of construction and many more of planning, Washington County has completed the new events and conference center Wingspan (WECC) a Hillsboro (Oregon), an installation that draws attention from the same lobby that has a spectacular Led video wall Planar CarbonLight CLI.

This modern facility 27.127 square meters is the centerpiece of a fair complex that includes 12.192 m2 of exhibition space, a conference center 4.267 m2, a spacious lobby and multiple meeting rooms.

WECC was created to provide new business opportunities in Washington County, by introducing conference spaces, events and meetings designed with high-end finishes and equipped with the latest technology. The venue is designed to host fairs, corporate meetings and seminars, banquets, charity events, festivals and sporting events, as well as community meetings.

During the initial design phases of the project, The county specified a video wall solution in the WECC lobby to give the space greater flexibility in its use..

“The goal of this video wall was to increase the value of the lobby as a rental space and create opportunities to advertise the different types of events being held.”, comenta Geoffrey Kavulya, Washington County Capital Improvements Project Director,.

At one of the design meetings, the concept of a screen that could wrap around a wall was suggested. “It was an interesting idea and we decided to explore it.”, Kavulya explains.. “We order a rendering and, when we receive it, everyone liked the way it looked”.

Next, The county hired Planar to see if its concept was feasible from a construction standpoint.. “The conversations with the company allowed us to learn about new visualization technologies”, clarifies Kavulya. “That's what ultimately led us to the Planar CarbonLight CLI Series option.”.

The technological integrator IES Communications installed a Planar CarbonLight CLI Series video wall of almost 10 meters wide and 4,8 high with a configuration of 20×10 and a pixel pitch of 1,9 mm (CLI1,9) that wraps around an external corner in the WECC lobby.

“You don't see these wraparound external corners very often, so we were excited by the opportunity to work on something that is not an everyday piece”, says Franklin Cooper, audiovisual designer at IES Communications.

Uniqueness factor

As a unique design feature, Planar CarbonLight CLI wraparound video wall is critical to the county's strategy to incorporate elements that make the WECC facility more attractive as an event space.

This video wall not only improves the way the lobby is used, but it provides a unique character to the space that makes it more memorable. “The video wall is a central attraction of the building: Create an experience that attracts potential sellers”.

Understanding that a captivating digital billboard will attract many eyes during events and conferences, County plans to use Planar CarbonLight CLI Series video wall as an asset to generate revenue through advertising.

The county worked with IES Communications and content management system provider Hypersign to develop custom signage templates, giving users the flexibility to display content on each side of the installation or along the entire length of the video wall. “Depending on what each seller wants to show and how they want to present it, has different options to meet your needs”, Kavulya said..

When IES Communications performed the installation, The lightweight carbon fiber construction of the CarbonLight CLI series allowed them to integrate the display without requiring any structural modifications to the video wall.. Designed for rental and staging applications, The modularity and adaptable design of this Planar series are an advantage for permanent installations.
