The new Kansas City airport terminal has opened its doors focusing on the traveler experience and offering a space where technology prevails, with large Led walls controlled by multimedia servers Green Hippo Boreal+ MK2 of TVOne.
The new multi-million dollar terminal 39 doors is considered the largest infrastructure project in the history of Kansas and the spacious building, full of natural light, reflects the aspirations of the city. Local artists have created works that have been installed throughout the building, which houses more than 126 companies, owned by women and minority groups.
The modern ticket sales area has an LED wall that occupies the entire counter, with more than 38.000 pixels wide and 480 high. Led wall displays key information and airline brand content. In the arrivals area, at the information desk, there is a smaller Led wall. Three Green Hippo Boreal+ MK2 media servers control all visual content, with a main one and a reserve one for the ticket counter wall and another for the arrivals screen.
The technology company Dimensional Innovations was hired to provide the content and integrate the system. “It was the first time we used Green Hippo in an installation, and we decided on Hippotizer because the client's requirements matched their capabilities”, explains Chris Riebschlager, Director of Creative Technology at Dimensional Innovations.
“It is the perfect tool for this job. The solid playback performance was a pleasant surprise and the ability to manage multiple machines from a single user interface was very beneficial. It was also very useful to be able to save, Export and backup programs with ease.”
Dimensional Innovations states that its first challenge was acquiring knowledge about the system Hippotizer to complete the work before the airport opens. “Thanks to Nick Spencer and the Green Hippo team, We had a lot of support while learning the system”, comments Riebschlager. “Nick Spencer met us on site to help us with the initial setup. It was incredibly helpful to hear directly from someone with a lot of experience with Green Hippo”.
The content on the screens was created by the Dimensional Innovations video production team, and there is also information provided by the airline.
Plus airline branded looped content, Status messages appear above each counter to direct travelers to specific service areas. Each airline has personalized content behind its counter.
Dimensional Innovations was also commissioned to develop a content management system that would allow the airport and airlines to modify information in real time..
“There are custom status messages that airlines can change at any time using our cloud-hosted content management system.”, Riebschlager continues. “We use the TouchDesigner plugin to render these status messages as a web page, which is then chopped with Hippotizer VideoMapper and placed in each mixture. Besides, Airlines can activate different presets in Hippotizer through this content management system. A locally hosted web service transmits these changes from the content management system to Hippotizer through the interface Rest API, that we are making the most of”.
The main content runs in a loop and is basically on autopilot, and the team reports that the project was completed long before the airport opened.
Patrick McMahon of Dimensional Innovations worked as a producer on the project, Devin Kelly-Collins as a developer, Dexter Brewer as a motion designer and Emilio Servigon as a UI/UX designer.
“We are thrilled to help make these core visual features of the new Kansas City International Airport Terminal a reality.”, explains Scott Kehoe, TVOne Regional Sales Director.
“The experience created by Dimensional Innovations and TVOne with our Green Hippo Media Server platform will provide dynamic visuals and excitement to travelers when they pass by the ticker and information desk”.
