He musical Masquerade has been captivating visitors and critics since the end of last July. The concept of this production, directed by Diane Paulus, stands out for its reinterpretation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic musical The Phantom of the Opera, as well as for the immersive experience that transcends the limits of traditional theater.
Instead of having fixed seats, Guests move freely throughout a multi-story building in midtown Manhattan and are right in the middle of the action. The special architecture of the room and the constant change in the audience's position have placed extreme demands on the sound system., Brett Jarvis was responsible for its design., a challenge that has been resolved with extensive LD Systems audio installation, brand of Adam Hall.
The legendary Lee’s Art Shop, on the street 57, has been completely remodeled and is transformed into a fascinating world of experiences in each performance. Each floor presents its own scenarios, From opulent ballrooms to mysterious catacombs.
Theater, music, Dance and detailed set design merge in a production that the audience experiences up close and from constantly changing perspectives. From the first performances, This form of staging has ensured sold out seats and great attention on the international musical and theater scene..
Technical masterpiece on five floors
The audio and public address system requirements were extraordinary: uniform sound distribution in several rooms of very different design, maximum speech intelligibility at all angles, minimal susceptibility to feedback with headsets and lapel microphones, natural high frequency reproduction for classical arrangements and powerful low frequency reproduction for organ sounds. All this integrated into a design of surround sound.
The speakers had to be integrated so discreetly into the set that they did not disturb the immersive experience., especially since the audience is usually just a few meters from the performers.
“From the first meeting with sound designer Brett Jarvis and the producer Lee McCutcheon, It became clear that we had to do everything possible for the Masquerade show”, explains Jens Kleinhuis, Adam Hall Group Pro Audio Field Applications Engineer.
Together with Ivan Klepac, Integrated Systems field applications engineer at Adam Hall, an audio setup was created over the course of several demo dates and training sessions.
