LG shows the future of its OLED TV panels: enrollables, transparent and with 4K resolution
Flexibility, Transparency and high resolution define the two new prototypes of OLED panels developed by LG, currently in sizes 18 inches: one capable of rolling up enough to fit into a three centimeter diameter tube without problems and another that reaches a 30% transmittance and incorporates the company's pixel design technology.
It is not the first time that the South Korean multinational LG takes a step further in the development of flexible and curved screens, mainly in the mobile device environment, which now focuses on two prototypes of OLED panels, with a size of 18 inches and resolution of 1,200×810 pixels: one that can be folded or rolled up to a radius of three centimeters without affecting the operation and image of the screen and another semi-transparent.
To achieve this flexibility, LG has used polyamide sheets in the exterior design of the panel (such as synthetic nylon or Kevlar), which, in addition to having less thickness and being more resistant, makes it easy to roll up without problems.
For the development of the 18” transparent OLED TV screen prototype, LG has reduced the opacity of the images and incorporated its transparent pixel design technology to achieve a 30% transmittance, surpassing the quality of transparent LCD screens, that have a 10-15% transmittance.
As pointed out by the head of LG's R&D department, In The Stor, The company's forecast is to manufacture in the year 2017 a larger screen with this flexible and transparent technique, specifically, a television screen 60 inches with ultra high definition (UHD-4K) Transparent and rollable OLED.
