To replace the old screens, V and P series models have been installed, in formats of 40 a 55 inches. Besides, NEC Display has been in charge of managing the installation to ensure maximum visibility and impact.

The flight information display system (Flight Information Display System – FIDS) of the Billund Airport was becoming obsolete and to renew it it has opted for technology NEC Display Solutions to transform the passenger experience and offer new revenue opportunities.

Billund Airport is the gateway to Legoland, with more than three million passengers passing through it every year. The FIDS had been installed for more than a decade. The screens were small, dark and poorly located, which resulted in a bad experience for passengers who wanted to find information about their trip, as shipping details, gate number or any flight delay.

Looking for a partner that could provide the best technology, but also to provide you with expert advice to get the most out of your new screens. The old displays, existing at the airport, They could only show very basic content, and those responsible for this Danish airport had much more ambitious ideas in mind.

They wanted their new screens to do much more than provide flight information, reimagine the entire passenger experience creating a true 'sense of place', provide peace of mind to passengers worried about missing their flights and use them to direct passengers to your duty free shop, food and drinks…

This project was as much about the content and consulting as it was about the screens themselves, since they were looking for a way to create a compelling experience for each traveler who passed through the terminal.

NEC Display provided a consulting plan based on its V and P series large format displays, varying in size from 40 at 55 inches. Besides, managed the installation to ensure they were carefully positioned around the terminal for maximum visibility and impact.

“NEC has helped us transform the passenger experience. Where before we relied on static signs and posters to provide information to passengers, “We can now provide this on high-resolution displays that are perfectly positioned and deliver maximum impact.”, explains Martin Hjort Nielsen, Billund Airport Cross Channel Manager.

The centerpiece of the project combined multiple screens into a giant video wall in the arrivals area, allowing all flight information to be displayed on a single screen. Passengers can easily identify their flight status at a glance, instead of looking for a screen. The new screens incorporate the Open Pluggable Specification (OPS) by NEC.

OPS has opened a new world for Billund, allowing them to implement smart search, video advertising and dynamic content, and manage everything centrally. To ensure messages are sent to the right passengers at the right time, NEC implemented Smart Airport Signage based on digital signage software PADS4.

Billund Airport now runs PADS4 on 175 NEC displays with a hardware mix of OPS players and Windows PCs. Having a centralized system makes it quick and easy to distribute and manage information to all screens throughout the airport.

“This project has allowed us to revolutionize the way we communicate with passengers. We are now creating a range of engaging content, from targeting information to dynamic advertising, that keeps travelers fully informed, encourages them to visit airport services and even advertises attractions in and around Billund.”, commented Hjort Nielsen.
