L-Acoustics brings crystalline sound to the Bierkönig in Palma de Mallorca
Installation performed to upgrade sound infrastructure shows versatility of networked pro audio systems. Four main PA lines, based on the technology of L-Acoustics, provide complete coverage.
In this Mallorcan leisure venue, a decentralized sound system has been installed that overcomes the architectural challenges of this emblematic venue with capacity for 2.000 personas. The solution has focused on the L-Acoustics A Series Loudspeakers, selected by their Panflex technology.
Located in the heart of the nightlife area of Palma de Mallorca, it is located Bierkönig, a unique space of more than 5.000 square meters with terrace offering live performances and DJ sets, ranging from German pop to Schlager music. The venue needed a professional sound system, capable of delivering consistent audio in its spacious interior space. L-Acoustics was the solution.
A major renovation of the main hall 1.250 square meters of Bierkönig, New area, has included a complete overhaul of the audio system. This main performance space, with capacity for up to 2.000 people every night, It had been suffering for some time from a sound system that was not up to par with the legendary venue..
With uneven coverage and an undefined sound profile that was detrimental to artists' performances, The time had come for a complete transformation.
German integration specialists Rhineland acoustics, together with long-term collaborators and Babble & Haeger, certified L-Acoustics partner, were hired to design and install a new professional system that would offer significantly improved audio quality, while managing the sound emission to neighboring properties.
Overcoming architectural obstacles
The renovation presented acoustic challenges and limitations that required innovative solutions. The limited ceiling height made traditional installation of a central system impossible, while the complex architecture of the enclosure (with a balcony, multiple columns and variable ceiling heights) required millimeter precision in speaker placement.
Precise placement of suspension points and coordination with other professionals during the renovation also posed challenges during the implementation phase..
“This was not a project where standard approaches could be applied”, explains Nico Decker, RheinlandAkustik event technology specialist. “The client's vision was very clear: uniform coverage throughout the audience area with maximum interior acoustic pressure, while protecting neighboring residents from the spread of noise. Achieving that balance required innovative thinking”.
Bierkönig's architectural limitations presented complex challenges. “Each column, every roof variation, every line of sight had to be carefully considered. The decentralized approach was not just a design decision, but the only way to achieve the uniformity of coverage and sound quality that this legendary venue deserved.”, duck Markus Drols, Babbel event technology specialist & Haeger.
Beyond architectural limitations, the venue presented great operational challenges. Attendees enjoy performances from radically different listening positions, some standing on the main floor, others elevated on bar stools throughout the space. Meanwhile, Bierkönig's coastal location subjects teams to significant weather fluctuations, requiring robust solutions designed for long life.
Precision Design with Soundvision
The RheinlandAkustik design team turned to software Soundvision from L-Acoustics to manage the complex acoustic environment. Advanced modeling capabilities were essential to optimize coverage patterns around obstacles and ensure uniform sound distribution across different audience heights and architectural features.
“Soundvision was essential”, points out Tim Goldhahn de Rhineland acoustics. “Combined with L-Acoustics Cable Length Acceptance Tool, allowed us to identify each coverage challenge and optimize system placement for seamless integration. Without that level of precision in planning, This project would not have achieved its objectives”.
The solution focused on the A series speakers de L-Acoustics, specifically selected for their Panflex technology, allowing precise control of directivity. This flexibility allowed the team to create a decentralized speaker configuration that overcame ceiling height restrictions., maintaining optimal performance throughout the facility. Network integration and seamless installation
“Managing a project of this complexity requires fluid coordination between all interested parties.”, explains Tobias Hemmersbach, Babbel project manager & Haeger. “From initial site surveys to final commissioning, every detail had to be meticulously planned. The renewal deadline required precise execution, and the L-Acoustics ecosystem gave us the reliability and flexibility to meet deadlines., maintaining the highest quality standards”.
Final installation demonstrates the versatility of networked pro audio systems. Four main PA lines provide complete coverage: the lines 1 y 2 They have L/R suspension systems of two A15i Wide and central suspension systems of two A10i Wide; the line 3 implements L/R suspension systems that combine an A15i Focus and an A15i Wide unit, complemented by central and right outer suspension systems from an A10i Wide; and the line 4 replicates the configuration of the lines 1 y 2 with L/R suspension systems of two A15i Wide and central suspension systems of two A10i Wide, ensuring consistent coverage patterns.
The monitoring is managed by four X8i units suspended from the rear ceiling for the living room, four floor-mounted X12 units serving the main stage and two X8 units serving the main DJ booth, while three X8i units provide room filling.
Low frequency reinforcement is provided by six KS21i subwoofers, two of them configured in cardioid mode for directional control, plus centrally hung delay subwoofers comprising four KS21i in cardioid configuration. The outdoor terrace receives coverage through six X8i speakers, while VIP areas are served by dedicated X8 L/R speakers.
The system is powered by amplified controllers LA7.16i, with an LC16D format converter that manages signal distribution from the venue's mixer matrix, converting MADI to Milan-AVB for seamless network integration.
The signal distribution uses the red Milan-AVB, chosen for its reliability and easy implementation in the L-Acoustics ecosystem. System calibration was performed by L-Acoustics, which provided expert support to ensure optimal performance.
Transforming operations
The impact goes far beyond technical specifications. Since the reopening, The improved audio system has transformed the operational capacity of the venue. The technical team, familiar with L-Acoustics systems through years of experience, adapted to the new installation.
RheinlandAkustik implemented a matrix control system personalized with an intuitive application interface, simplifying daily operations for venue staff managing multiple audio sources in different areas.
“The difference has been notable”, reflects a Bierkönig representative. “Artists consistently praise the system's uniform coverage and well-defined, neutral sound profile. And what is more important, We can now accommodate a much greater variety of artists, making our programming more engaging and eliminating the need for visiting artists to rent additional sound equipment. This has optimized production workflows and significantly reduced costs”.
Network signal distribution through Milan-AVB offers optimal scalability for future expansions.
“In case new renovations or area expansions are planned, The system architecture facilitates the direct integration of new areas, which positions Bierkönig for continued evolution, while maintaining its cultural relevance”, Goldhahn clarifies.
