The exhibition, composed of a collection of immersive exhibitions, like the Construction Gallery, King Kong or los assessorors Ottis, transport visitors to the origins of the iconic building. For this, It is helped by different screens and video walls.

El Empire State Building (ESB) opened this summer a new exhibition featuring a collection of immersive exhibits. Located on the second floor of the building, explore the history and construction, as well as its role and influence in popular culture.

Last year the doors were opened to show the public the new design of this famous skyscraper, which presented a renovated entrance where display elements are very present. Last June it was the small museum's turn, which is located between the entrance and the elevators; y, now, the new viewpoint has been opened, in the plant 102, offering a 360º view.

The first phase included the design and construction of a new Observatory entrance and lobby to create a reimagined journey for guests with spectacular photography and visualization technologies. Leyard y Planar. In the second phase, design concepts have been merged with technologies that allow creating attractive experiences for visitors that tell the story of the emblematic building..

Covering the entrance fee to access the Observatory Experience, on the second floor, A comprehensive digital signage solution is available that helps users find their way and provides informational assistance in different languages..

This consists of a 4.8 inch Leyard DirectLight×0,6 meters with a pixel pitch of 1.5mm (DLX1.5) in a configuration of 8×2.

DirectLight×7. This external video controller allows you to create a Led display solution that integrates processing directly into the product.. Includes an aspect ratio of 16:9 and precise pixel pitch that ensure Full HD resolutions, 4K u 8K.

construction gallery

Inspired by the photography of Lewis Hine, The 'Construction Gallery' is an immersive experience that transports visitors back in time to 1930, when the ESB was being built.

Six video walls designed with Leyard CarbonLight CLI Series Led, with a pixel pitch of 2,6 mm (CLI2.6) and designed in various configurations (the largest of 19×5) They are integrated into the walls and ceilings of the space, each showing a unique video segment that combine to create a single looped film that recreates the atmosphere of a construction site atop one of the ESB's unfinished floors..

The CarbonLight CLI series is a line of lightweight and flexible LED display solutions used to meet the requirements of a wide range of applications.. It is characterized by its carbon fiber frames, thin, modular and high resistance that can be adapted to complex designs such as beveled video walls and, even, gently curved.

The digital studio Squint/Opera provided insight into the Construction Gallery media experience, in which they participate 30 actors in various construction activities characteristic of that time, giving visitors a taste of what it would be like to stand on an upper floor of the ESB while construction unfolds around them.

Squint/Opera's design scope for this project was made possible by multidisciplinary expertise as it created the digital content that can be seen in the exhibits., including projections, animation, elements of live and immersive technology.

To conceptualize the scale of the room in these exhibits, The Squint/Opera design process was based, to a large extent, in virtual reality as a design tool. The team used Hyperform, a data-driven design tool that allowed us to build a 3D visualization of the interior of the Empire State Building.

“The film includes recreated footage of workers operating cranes and driving rivets into steel beams. The LED screens and audio system are synchronized so that the scene develops evenly around the visitor. For example, the reproduction shows a crane moving along a canvas, connecting and moving through a screen located on the ceiling, and then falling onto an opposite video wall canvas”, comments Aaron Hickman, senior design engineer Diversified, company in charge of integrating video walls.

The Construction Gallery includes artistic and physical designs that are intended to simulate a workplace on the ESB floor of 1930, like exposed beams, unfinished wood panels, pipe materials and stacks of wooden planks that become makeshift benches. There are also bronze sculptures of construction workers placed throughout the space..

“The content of the Led video walls is mixed with scenic elements and physical designs so that the visitor feels like they are part of the construction site. “Led installations seem to transform into stages”, aclara Hickman.

King Kong Exhibition

As an American cultural icon, The ESB has been presented in more than 250 movies and television shows, and has made his well-known film debut in the film King Kong of 1933.

The King Kong exhibition celebrates the building's historic introduction to the silver screen by welcoming guests to an office from the era of 1930, where a life-size video image of the famous ape peeks out of the windows while appearing to cling to the side of the building: His hands have pierced the walls to gain a better grip. Through the windows that line the room, guests can see planes circling preparing to attack.

The window video displays are designed with nine LCD screens of 98 inches and 4K resolution of the Planar UltraRes series™ With Ultra HD resolution (3840 x 2160) and exceptional image and color quality for native 4K and upscaled content, The Planar UltraRes series is an ideal solution for interlacing video content into an immersive user experience.

“The windows of the replica are designed slightly smaller than those of the screens and are set back from the glass to create a feeling of immersion: It feels like you're on the top floor of the building and looking out a window at New York.”, Dijo Hickman. “here again, The visual and audio playback of King Kong moving around outside is synchronized and tied to the physical effects occurring inside the room”.

Otis elevators

Otis Elevator Company, who built the original elevators at the ESB, sponsored two exhibitions called: 'Historical elevators' and the 'Elevator experience'.

The first features a replica of an original tower cabin with one of the interior walls equipped with a Planar UltraRes Series 4K LCD screen. 98 inches in vertical configuration.

“The UltraRes series screen shows a reproduction that imitates what it would be like to open the tower cabin door while moving from floor to floor in the unfinished building at the time of construction. The screen is huge and it is very spectacular to have the entire wall of the tower car activated by the media”, comments Hickman.

The second exhibition is a simulation that allows you to be inside an elevator shaft. On each side of the walls, two CarbonLight CLI Led screens, with a pixel pitch of 2,6 mm (CLI2.6), in configurations of 5×4, have been installed behind two-way mirrors to imitate a wide bank of elevators.

“Media video walls show elevator cars going up and down. Visitors see pulleys, wiring and other cars flying by and being timed with some 4D effects like air gusts and vibrating floors to simulate those conditions.”

According to Hickman, The assistance Leyard and Planar provided to Diversified throughout the project was critical to ensuring a successful integration and creating the most compelling and immersive exhibits..

They worked closely with Diversified every step of the way to ensure a successful outcome. That partnership and shared commitment to the ESB resulted in a powerful experience that guests will enjoy for a lifetime..

“With experimental installations of this type - which include personalized content, recreations, acting and special effects, the experience is meant to be seen and produced in a very specific way. This means putting a lot more effort into setup and perfection in terms of how display technologies are integrated.”.
