LG has been selected by the Ministry of Commerce, South Korea Industry and Energy (MOTION) to develop your national project of extendable screens.

Will supervise the large-scale R&D project, which is an important part of MOTIE's momentum since 2019, to boost South Korea's next-generation display industry by encouraging the development of core technologies. The company aims to develop products with these characteristics, with an elongation of 20%, to 2024.

“These extendable screens have a wide spectrum of application. In the era of IoT, 5G and driverless cars, extendable screens will play a very important role and we are very happy and honored to be an important part in the development of these technologies and products”, comenta Soo-Young Yoon, senior vice president and head of LG Display Laboratory. ”

Extendable displays are considered the ideal next-generation technology because they can be extended in “free form”, similar to stretching a rubber band, without affecting its quality, For example, through distortion. In comparison, existing commercial flexible display technologies, such as folding and rolling panels, They only excel in certain areas or directions. Therefore, extensible ones are considered the final phase of the evolution of flexible screens.

The great flexibility they offer shows the great potential they have to be used in a large number of applications., once this technology is developed. These include multi-fold smart devices or displays for cars and airplanes that overcome the design limitations of curved surfaces.. The scope of application and market potential is expected to be almost infinite..

To carry out this project, LG has the support of a group of 21 entities, which include companies, research institutes and universities. An ecosystem that will take care, in addition to developing basic technologies, obtain patents and create and care about new markets with high added value through the development of extendable screens. All entities will collaborate in the development of materials, relevant components and equipment to create a robust environment for Korea's future display technologies.
