Modulo Pi promotes an interactive projection at the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco
At the exhibition 'Mediterranean 2050’ This oceanographic center displays a sperm whale sculpture that comes to life thanks to interactive projections, powered by the Modulo Kinetic media server Moson.

One of the most notable elements of the exhibition is a sperm whale sculpture that comes to life thanks to interactive projections, powered by media server solution Module Kinetic Module Pi Module and the technical experience of ID Scenes.
In the heart of Monaco Oceanographic Institute, the exhibition Mediterranean 2050 takes visitors on a journey through the past, the present and an imagined future of the Mediterranean Sea.
Con una superficie de más de 1000 m², this immersive experience on a large scale celebrates the richness of marine heritage while raising awareness of the most pressing environmental issues. The exhibition takes place in four scenic areas that combine artistic installations, large scale projections, interactive systems and cutting-edge technology.
The creative studio Dreamed By Us was in charge of the artistic direction of several spaces and partnered with the audiovisual provider ID Scènes to install a monumental sculpture of a sperm whale, a powerful emblem of marine life. Printed in 3D and with a height of almost 5 metros, the sculpture serves as a canvas for an interactive projection that is activated by the visitor's movement.
To meet the challenges of this complex technical installation, ID Scènes installed four video projectors Epson, all powered by Modulo Pi's Modulo Kinetic media server platform. A Kinetic Designer workstation and a servidor V-Node With six outputs they manage content and interactivity in real time.
He Video Patch of the sculpture was achieved by importing the modelo 3D from the sperm whale to the interface Kinetic Designer. “The highly detailed shape of the whale required a hybrid approach.”, using a 3D calibration partial followed by manual deformation to achieve perfect alignment”, explains Quentin Grêlé, multimedia server operator and visual designer at ID Scènes.
Interactivity at the base of the chocolate sculpture
Interactivity is based on LiDAR sensors Hokuyo integrated into the base of the sperm whale sculpture. It is divided into seven zones., each physically equipped with a LiDAR UST-10LX and associated with a specific topic.
Thanks to the compatibility of Modulo Kinetic with Hokuyo LiDARs, when a visitor enters one of the detection zones, the content linked to the corresponding topic is automatically activated and projected onto the sculpture. Once a theme is activated, This is blocked until the end of its playback. Only wave effects can be activated simultaneously to ensure a smooth and coherent experience.
Modulo Kinetic also manages additional layers of interactivity in the installation, all based on the movement of the visitor: activates animated particles that simulate foam, spatialized sound effects and the display of short texts and key figures on the history of the Mediterranean.
To combine these different interactive effects, Quentin Grêlé turned to Modulo Kinetic's node-based composition tool. “Extensively used the Graphics Editor to manage LiDAR beams. They are used independently for each of the seven themes, but they also combine to recreate a common surface with a single detection area throughout the base”.
The entire system was automated and customized for the museum team. Thanks to Modulo Kinetic's show control tools, Sequences and settings can be managed through a dedicated control panel: video projectors turn on and off, alternates between thematic media and background environment, and much more.
By combining complex mapping, precise interactivity and intuitive control, Modulo Kinetic proved to be a key tool for this innovative installation.
