MMMAD will turn Madrid's urban space into a great window on digital art
During the month of May, The Urban Digital Art Festival (MMMAD) will transform urban supports for advertising use into cultural spaces where the work of 54 Artists. Immersive experiences will also be available and workshops and digital meetings will be held.
The first edition of MMMAD, the Urban Festival of Digital Art of Madrid, will turn the city into the epicenter of digital art throughout the month of May. This event will be deployed throughout the city with an extensive program that includes exhibitions of national and international artists on the digital marquees of JCDecaux, the screens of Roca Madrid Gallery and the Super 8 in Press Palace or the Equis Room.
Immersive installations will also be shown on the giant curved screen of Ideas Workshop or the geodesic dome of the new space DOMO360, where pieces by Peru Medem or Daniel Canogar will be shown.
Likewise, A program of workshops and digital meetings will be offered in La Casa Encendida and the Espacio Fundación Telefónica.
The program is completed with the visual scketches that will be projected on the digital façade of Medialab Prado, selected in the call for their Program the Plaza. Another international call for artists will also be organized through filter Instagram, where the winning projects will be part of an interactive exhibition that will take place in the garden of the Goethe-Institut of Madrid and the LABA School of Art, Design & New Media, of Valencia.
The poster of initiatives will be completed with an online program, which will be broadcast through the Twitch of the festival, and the activation of two artistic spaces in Carabanchel: Casa Antillón, with the exhibition Rebel Soft, and a performance in Room Number 34, that connects physical and digital space.
A sample of 54 Artists
In total, 54 artists of 15 nationalities -with an average age of 33 years and a total of five million followers- will exhibit their work on screens throughout the city, transforming the urban space into a great window to digital art to bring this discipline closer to the general public and place Madrid on the international map of digital creation.
Pol, The first virtual influencer (CGI) Spanish, will be in charge of opening the festival on Monday 3 from Sala Equis, that participates in the festival with its interior screen, and through MMMAD's Twitch channel.
In addition to launching a digital manifesto on the identity and ambiguity of what is real and what is not, will present its new video clip, directed by digital artist Andrei Warren.
In this event, the sound artist ALV Adina will present her new EP The Body and the public will attend an appearance of Onyx, an interdimensional being with iridescent skin and variable morphologies.
Digital culture and public space
The directors of MMMAD, Aida Salán, Cristóbal Baños and Diego Iglesias, that are part of the creative studio Hyper Studio and the contemporary art platform Finding Art Madrid, They propose that the festival explore the intersection between digital culture and public space, innovating in formats and turning urban media for advertising use into cultural spaces.
Proof of this is Social Motion, an exhibition that is exhibited from the 1 to the 15 in the digital marquees of JCDecaux located on the axis of Fuencarral streets, Goya and Cibeles.
Throughout this tour you will be able to enjoy this collective exhibition of international artists and creators of the Harddiskmuseum, a digital art museum stored on a hard drive of 2 TB and created by the Spaniard Solimán López.
In this exhibition you can see the works of 15 international artists including Ines Alpha, Claudia Maté, Exitsimulation, Stephen Deacon or Cool3DWorld. In addition, the project can be deepened through the meeting The new spaces of digital art, which will take place at Espacio Fundación Telefónica.
Another innovative example in format and space for art is Roca Madrid Gallery, which during the month of May will transform its screens into cultural devices, both the eight-metre urban and the indoor, to welcome Fluids, An international group exhibition, and site-specific, with works by digital artists Andrei Warren, I Say Digital, Rachel Lamot, Harriet Davey and Yilmaz Sen, curated by Lola Zoido, Mit Borrás and Yosi Negrín.
The MMMAD festival seeks to support emerging talent, programming young artists and creators such as Teresa Rofer, The Rodina or Andrei Warren, alongside established artists such as Zach Lieberman, Daniel Canogar or Marina Núñez.
Throughout the month, Super Screens 8 of the Palacio de la Prensa will become cultural devices to show the work of the Anglo-Spanish artist Natalia Stuyk.
Immersive experiences in 360 Degrees
Of the 13 to the 16 May, The DOMO360 space, located in Ciudad Universitaria, Display ARAN360, an immersive projection of 50 minutes of duration, that will be seen in a geodesic dome of 22 meters in diameter, and where five works by Peru Medem+Alba del Castillo will be offered, Marina Nuñez, Daniel Canogar, Amaya Hernández and Teresa Rofer. This project is a collaboration between Aran Art Network and the RTVE's Audiovisual Innovation Laboratory.
In addition, the multimedia space Taller de Ideas will open its doors for the first time to digital art to show, every weekend in May, An immersive piece by an international artist of recognized prestige.
The giant curved screen of 10×3 metros will host Vitamin Studio's interactive installation (7-9 May) and the works of The Rodina (14-16 May), Estela Oliva (21-23 May) and Zach Lieberman (28-30 May).
Workshops and digital meetings
MMMAD workshops will take place at La Casa On, La Casa Encendida's online programme.
Of the 4 to the 21 three online workshops will be held where topics such as: Define what digital skin looks like, how augmented reality works or what impact Google Maps has on our cities.
These courses will be accompanied by three public online talks, issued by Zoom, that will be given by international guests such as Keiken, Mario Santamaría or Georg Fassl.
The festival is also proposed as a platform for the visibility of new spaces in the city. The program accompanies the activation of a space in Carabanchel: Casa Antillón, which will open its doors with the exhibition Rebel Soft, A dialogue of innocence and rebellion by the Salamanca-born artist Amor.amor.amor.a.m.o.r and Marseillaise artist SLTCAMILLE; and activates a performance by Jesu Moratiel on the transfers between the physical and digital worlds in Room Number 34.
The festival is completed with an online program through its Twitch channel, where screenings will be issued, Meetings and conferences; and an international call for AR art in Instagram filters, open during this month of April.
The winning proposals, that address topics such as cyborg organisms, mutant skins or glitches of reality, are part of an interactive exhibition of Instagram filters that takes place in the garden of the Goethe-Institut in Madrid and will later be shown at LABA School of Art, Design & New Media, in Valencia. Of the selected projects, three of them will win the LABA Valencia Awards.

The edition 2021 has been developed thanks to the artistic collaboration of Harddiskmuseum, Aran Art Network and the RTVE Audiovisual Laboratory, and of the spaces: JCDecaux, Roca Madrid Gallery, Equis Room, Ideas Workshop, Casa Antillón, Room Number 34, DOMO360, La Casa Encendida, Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Goethe-Institut Madrid, Super 8 and Medialab Prado.
